Mostly whiteheads on my chin and forehead with the occasional larger zit on my forehead. Sometimes around my temples too. My forehead mostly just has red marks though. Some red marks on my cheeks too. Change pillow cases every 2 days now, have showers every day. Mostly red marks on the forehead and below my mouth with some in other places on the face. Breakouts also concentrated around below the mouth and forehead (moreso the former).

Foods same as it's always been since I was a kid, mostly chicken, fish, vegetables, rice or bread and once in a blue moon I'll have pasta. But I suppose it could be diet, but I doubt it since I've kinda been eating the same thing forever. Then again allergies develop and I did suddenly get hay fever at the age of like 14 until around 20 when it calmed down a lot.

Don't touch my face much and I'm kind of obsessive about being clean, my mom said always have been since i was younger. Keep my clothes clean, bed clean everything. Routine atm is salycilic face wash (cerave), moisturizer with SPF night. This routine is mostly inherited from my older sister who told me to start doing it but I'm not sure if it's working for me.

I occasionally get bouts of anxiety where I'm scared the red marks won't stop but idk tbh. I'm looking to start my s*** from scratch and make sure I know for a fact I've exhausted every option.

Okay so whiteheads are usually caused by oil production issues and clogged pores that are filled with debris and gunk.

Have you ever chemically exfoliated before? This is a very classic fix. I’d switch up the routine at the moment. Are you using a moisturizer with SPF at night time? That’s not really smart or necessary. Let me know and I can make you a quick routine (I’ll make it as adorable as possible).

Oil production issues... Would that be over or underproduction? Maybe could be either since I know oil is important to some extent but within a limit. Or at least from what I remember I may be talking bs. Pretty sure I have oily or combination skin, especially around the sides of my nose and the area under my eyes (that aren't my cheeks) tend to be oiler.

Not really familiar with chemical exfoliation, most of my experience with skincare was just wholesale lifted from whatever my older sister was doing a year ago. I'm probably not even doing it right based on how little I seem to know. What would you suggest? I stopped that routine around 2 months ago now since I've not really been doing well and have been sorting of dejected due to temporary life stuff. Mostly just lazily wash my face with water twice a day like an idiot. But that can't get in the way of self care, which makes you feel better.

Sincerely, thank you for all the help my brother. I really really genuinely appreciate it.

Oil production can be bad either way - too much and it’ll clog your pores and not enough and your skin will end up overproducing to compensate.

The best way to combat this is to keep your skin hydrated and use products that ensure it’s being cleaned beyond the surface, hence chemical exfoliation. This step mainly has two major ingredients: AHA (cleans and strips the top layer of dead skin cells allowing a fresh layer to grow) and BHA (goes beneath the surface to remove oil, gunk and debris) ensuring pores are clean. When you first use chemical exfoliants, you may break out but don’t worry, this is called purging. Your skin is moving all that dirt up to the surface before getting rid of it. Think of it like cleaning your room, you have to pile all the mess together before you throw it out right?

Now for a routine, let’s keep it - as cheap as possible, as potent in treatment and as hydrating as possible.

Face Wash: Skin 1004’s Madagascar Centella Oil Cleanser - This is a beautiful 2 in 1 oil cleanser, read op for more info but when you told me you have issues with white heads, oil cleansing immediately sprung to mind and this is an exceptional product.

Treatment: Peach Slices’ AHA + BHA Toner: Introducing chemical exfoliants can be harsh for some, this product circumvents that, it’s very gentle and effective. This will tackle all those white heads at the root of your skin.

Hydrating: Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion - A holy grail product. Everyone needs this if they want glowing and hydrating skin, nothing else to be said.

Moisturizer: Good Science Beauty’s 003 Hydrating Face Cream - This is the most expensive step and one I wouldn’t cheap out on. This is a product I been using for the past year and it’s been my favourite moisturizer I’ve ever used. Super light and velvety cloud consistency that hydrates. I suggest looking at eBay, much cheaper than retail, you can get a bottle for less than $50 - make sure it’s the 50ml.

SPF: Check OP - got some good options that you can’t go wrong with!

Any questions let me know, always here

Not a big eye cream person but I’ve heard great things about two:

    • ALLIES OF SKIN Peptides & Omegas Firming Eye Cream (expensive option)

    • Saje Bright Eyes (my friend swears by this)

This is their hydrating facial, look for the face cream, that’s their moisturizer (it’s the one with a pump). However, eBay should have it much cheaper than retail as well, I just got a bottle for $33 USD.

Bought a few things at TJMaxx a couple weeks ago (cleanser, toner, and moisturizer) my skin had like an allergic reaction or something, face turned really red and irritated after the 3 day of use and started peeling the next few days

Now I’m wondering if my skin was just sensitive or not used to product since I’ve never really used any, or if the quality of the products was bad

That sounds like some sodium laureth sulfate!

Thanks for this. I really appreciate the explanations in simple terms, I find that's really rare in the skincare space. I like how you explained it scientifically too making it clear what is actually mean to happen with the chemical exfoliation.

I know you said during purging you may break out first since it's like cleaning a room, you need to pile the stuff together before you get rid of it. How long would this usually last just as a ballpark? When would you know to try something else/how long would you recommend to stick with a routine until you decide that it may not be working? This is something I always been unsure about to this point.

Also I wanna definitely triple check my skin type. I'm 99% sure I'm combination skin type, but do any of you guys know if there's a trusted resource I can check that has methods to verify my skin type? Wanna make sure I do it properly this time around.

you can blot your face with a certain type of paper and see how much oil sticks on to know. in terms of purging i normally give myself like 6-8 weeks before coming to any conclusions unless i feel a ton of discomfort and i get really red

  • Bought sunscreen, moisturizer and exfoliator. I'm one of yall now.

I'm glad I could help! Purging should be a couple weeks to a month max. Check this blog post for an indepth look at skin types and how to determine yours.

You can also patch test products:

    • To see if you're allergic = Behind the ear

    • To check for irritation = The area where you're most sensitive

    • To check for clogs or acne = The area in which you experience this the most

Most of the products I post in here usually stray away from irritating ingredients especially fragrance so none should irritate.

Most products will last months in my experience

Maybe @Campari has time to make an affordable list of essentials, otherwise Id check youtube and search for ‘skincare under $20/30’ or whatever
