Just go listen to Griselda or Nas or whatever you think “real rap” is in current year and stop trying to instill your take that the music others make should be a certain way

Nas makes modern sounding hip hop and collabs with young artists out of his comfort zone. It's okay for ppl to have a sense of critique even if it doesn't align with your misguided/narrow minded views.

The autotune takes away from the rapper's uniqueness and personality and how human they sound

So bored and tired of that s***.

Rappers can sound unique and dope by using their natural voice. See Snoop, Meth, Busta, etc. They have a certain presence that can't be cloned. Autotune would only make them sound worse.

I try to tell people this. I call it the water bottle towel syndrome.

And the best way I can describe that is a rapper who barely rehearses gets on stage has a wack presence. He’s pacing the stage with that stupid towel drinking from water bottle & acting like he’s performing working hard. Bad boy recording artists were masters of this.

I will be specific and name names. There is no group worse than the Migos on stage who became famous .

I watched a performance where they barely move with their tight rock star pants & this lack of energy. The dj was more horrible than IGGY freestyle That’s not to say you can’t wear rock star pants. But understand Mick Jagger, Axl, Robert Plant,Sebastian Bach, they worked their ass off to be able to maneuver on stage with this garb. Even Cameo had to go through the rehearsals with these crazy outfits. I’m not talking 15 minutes, I’m talking 5-8 hours a day.

If someone reads and you think Migos rehearse, you need to go to bellvue.

But I won’t pick on the new class. I’ve heard about how 18th letter Rakim was one of the original bullshitters on stage with his solo shows. He would allegedly lip sync his hits because he’s just not interested in giving a performance to a limited capacity crowd. I don’t know how many times he did it. But it was a thing.
Hopefully he stopped that when the video cameras were more present.

The point is, once the agitator, dictator or manager didn’t care, these shows are basura.

I’ll say another one, kool Keith. He’s known for half assing his shows.

Future is garbage live & people lose their s***.

I will tell you who is one of the greatest, there is only a few who can stand on stage with Tariq aka Thought.

Even without the roots, the live mixtapes he would do with j period? Are you kidding me? Do you understand his skill level to be able to do that? Absolutely stunning......

I love how I’m apparently the narrow minded one instead of the OP because I made a jotted example out of an artist lol

My point—unlike the one from the thread—isn’t even to detract from artists who’ve come from a past era/still usher in that sound.

It was to describe how utterly irrelevant it is to bring up a performance in an effort to discredit contemporary artists as being lazy or uninspired. It’s really a tired take by guys who only love to dunk on the newer generation without any validity.

There are going to be certain things that the old and the new do different being better or worse than each other, but trying to use all the stuff said as an argument just really makes no sense.

Say I’m missing the “point” or whatever, but it really just seems like you wanted to come up with another reason why things aren’t the way they used to be and how that’s supposed to be a negative consequence.

Yeah I agree, always felt it was weird

And it's even weirder when they want R&B singers who are supposed to be making "sexy" music to sound like that too

Everything said here is spot on, imo Lupe is one of the better performers too since he maintains good stage presence and still raps well live. Like look at his concert from 2012, it's ridiculously good:

  • You know what’s really trash, when there’s a rapper who can’t stop talking or stops the song midway doesn’t finish it. It isn’t even a medley, this mf just forgot.

I rarely will go to a rap show. Who wants to gamble with that? 😒
