Of course they don’t all have to be like that! The Pixies just certainly aren’t like that. I agree more with his assessment of them being conservative than unremarkable. I can see why he would find them unremarkable but I certainly don’t.

That's all definitely true but to label Pixies as "unremarkable" just off of that seems pretty disingenuous about the group and the legacy they've left. If anything them going in a significantly more pop-oriented direction compared to their contemporaries has made them stand out even more in the long run and basically made them the blueprint for most popular alt-rock of the 90s (obvious example being Nirvana).

He was a legendarily polarizing ‘zine writer in the 80’s. I forget which ones he wrote for (Matter and Forced Exposure, I think?) but he trashed tons of bands and was just kind of a general pain in the ass, haha

That’s one song on their first album, though. Nirvana were probably weirder than the Pixies, all things considered; they were younger, more into weirder music. I think he also just liked the guys in Nirvana as people more than he liked Frank Black, Joey Santiago or Dave Lovering, like more as the types of people he’d actually be friends with. (Kurt Cobain was allegedly as cool as Peter Sotos!)
