let's keep the faith the next ye or drake could be penning their debut at this very moment
They're not gonna come outta nowhere, though. We'll see them coming and so far, I don't see anyone with that sort of weight on the horizon.
Kendrick will be in for rude awakening when he realizes how this hiatus has affected his relationship with casual fans.
I feel like this will happen but you'll get called a hater if you say s*** like this.
you made it sound like the ceiling for the album is good and not great
No, i said the reception to the album is going to be affected no matter what because everyone is going to be expecting a long-term heavily meditated masterpiece, while at the same time the context of otherwise casual listeners is going to be slightly more muted that it drops to, so it's not going to be a Drake situation where the overwhelming casual fan response clouds out or balances out relative reception (which you can argue even happened with DAMN due to its commercial success/notability vs critical reception).
I'm not saying it won't be hyped or it won't be ultimately well received, I'm just saying that the environment an album drops to effects a lot of how it's remembered and received. I also think, yeah, it's possible Kendrick drops a masterpiece and proves everyone wrong. Other artists have done it - like I said D'Angelo had, what, a decade break and dropped a masterpiece that shocked everyone even when the hype was minimal or forgotten? It's possible.
So yeah, of course the actual art of an album is separate from this - there's tons of albums I love and consider in my top albums of all time which weren't released to groundbreaking acclaim and sales.
However I still find it interesting to look at the context from different angles. Stuff like the business of the industry and tangential history is just as interesting to me often when the artist themselves is interesting enough, like Kendrick clearly is.
Kendrick's in a pretty bad position in terms of recognition/reception. Post-DAMN he was probably at the peak of mainstream recognition and success he's had in his career, despite TPAB being more well received in terms of critics (which doesn't matter overall, but he himself clearly seems to care about reception and criticism). The problem is that he's waited so long post-DAMN (almost legit half a decade now), unless he comes back like D'Angelo did Voodoo->Black Messiah level of masterpiece, people are going to think he fell off because of what's riding on it and especially his overall discog/legacy. In reality, I'm sure the majority of his time off post-DAMN hasn't even been spent working on an album or music; this is usually the case with artists taking post-album hiatuses, but the perception of that is never really conveyed to the public. On the other hand as well, while he's done a small handful of features and stunts (i.e. pgLang & KEEM), he hasn't really done enough to fill the gap between public activity the way his contemporaries usually do (look other artists like Drake, J Cole, Weeknd, etc. feature run between albums for example - hell, even more artsy rappers like Earl). There's an argument if he put out stuff too quickly that'd saturate his discog/legacy too though especially if the immediate work wasn't as good as his predecessor albums, so he's really stuck between a rock and a hard place. As someone else said in the thread though too, he's definitely also lost a decent amount of casual listeners - which may not matter to him necessarily, but that's also going to effect the perception and "scope" of whatever he drops within the context of his discog. It's going to feel like a lot more muted of a drop than DAMN for example no matter what, regardless of the amount of hype, unless it is for real an actual undisputable masterpiece
All he has to do is drop another faux woke album and he'll have everyone eating out of the palm of his hands again.
Kendrick’s legacy is looking worse by the day. This comedy news right as Euphoria is popping just shows again there’s levels to this

That man released a bunch of classic albums. Not even one bad album will hurt his legacy in the long run.

idk about that, i'd be surprised if his next album wasn't more on some NoI / Black Israelite stuff, im pretty sure hes doubling down on that

yall are so f***ing stupid
''Kendrick hasn't gotten that kind of buzz since DAMN.'' Fact. The songs off the BP soundtrack didn't do s*** or have the same kind of impact as DAMN. did which, again, is my point.

I’m just speaking relatively really
Yeah he’s always gonna have a good legacy but it’s never been so clear that he’s the Nas to Drake’s Jay

Lets hope they have the longevity of a Ye and Drake too

You wanna burn down this thread with a post like this.

I'm sure he'll have woke bars on there, even if it's more mainstream. I doubt even if he goes super mainstream with the next album, it does nearly as well as DAMN. did so he might just settle for the Kinta Kunte route again.
