no s*** the things kanye said are so stupid, uninformed and can cause genuine damage. it's a real shame that a Prince / Warhol / Beatles / Bowie level artist and icon is so unapologetic about ruining his generation defining legacy

BUT - lots of "do as i say, not as i do" going on right now.

the talent agency CAA that dropped kanye from their roster in response to this situation is factually proven to have aided harvey weinstein in arranging the private meetings where he would conduct his abuse. but, once a controversial black man uses WORDS, not actions, they kick him to the curb?

adidas has every right to drop Ye. but i think its complete bullshit that they want to drop kanye and be all noble while simultaneously saying "we'll continue to sell yeezy designs without his name on it". so, you don't condone the things the man says, but you DO condone the way his designs can line your pockets?

twitter has every right to remove a man encouraging anti-semitism which is against their rules - makes sense. but why do they currently allow Suhail Shaheen (top Taliban spokesman) to actively use his official account with almost 700k followers - the taliban believe in the forceful prosecution of all Jewish people in the arab world.

don't even get me started on how all of these capitalists, social media infographic-ass-trends and the "who can hold the most social currency" holier-than-thou mentality of western culture is ALWAYS in favor of mental health education and awareness - except when Kanye is involved.

if headlines came out today "ed sheeran has manic episode, says he hates black people in incoherent string of racist tweets - has been purposefully avoiding his prescribed bipolar medications for 2 years", the amy schumer's and gigi hadid's of the world would be posting "Praying for Ed. Mental health matters, I hope he finds the care he needs right now." type bullshit right now on their instagram stories

have the man experience ramifications for irresponsibly abusing one of pop-culture's largest voices? fine, actions should absolutely have consequences. but it really rubs me the wrong way when all these already predatory institutions and societal norms throw all their circumstantial tolerance out the window when a nuanced conversation about mental illness and censorship appears. this situation is being handled so beyond poorly and hypocritically by all parties involved (kanye included).

    EDIT:
some people in the thread are taking my ed sheeran a***ogy too literally - i'm trying to make the point that if you put a much more palatable face on the front lines of a major controversy (a white one, perhaps), it would go down with much more empathy and cautiousness than this. all of the major systems kanye has been going against publically for years saw the golden opportunity to wipe him off the map and they are taking it

lowkey ppl just love watching companies do s*** like this. they'll talk s*** abt em any off day of the week but soon as you get some stupid overreach like this it's not interpreted as a reason for action or actual discussion by most ppl, it just becomes a spectacle to see for them

exactly. i saw some s*** about how the head of TDE whatever his name is tweeted something like "we love watching people ruin their lives like its a show or something" im butchering the exact words but it was that kind of statement and he's 100% right. once the social currency bandwagon starts rolling on you, you are F***ED. why does traffic slow so dramatically to watch the wreckage of an accident?

Yeah but those wholesome plants would’ve apologized and made a statement promising to change. Ye doubled down and refused to give a believable apology that didn’t come off as sarcastic

i agree, but since all these people love to shout their support for mental health from the rooftops, shouldn't they be much more forgiving of someone who in their own eyes is incapable of making a statement undistorted by a psychological ailment?

Tired of dudes correlating far-right attitudes with mental illness. Time to stop giving empathy and start kicking them to the curb

Medical News Today: "Remember, someone in a manic episode can say strange or nonsensical things to you while in the episode. Be mindful that it is the mania causing this."

if you think that someone with an untreated psychological condition who is surrounded by yes men and under a 24/7/365 microscope the entire planet is viewing deserves no empathy i don't know what to tell you

The forgiving has been going on for years. When he said slavery was a choice, chance the rapper still had his back. Ye talked about Deathcon 3 and joey badass said he was taken out of context. Every interview Ye has gotten they try to give him an out to apologize or to even adjust what he really meant and every time he doubles down. He didn’t get cancelled because he s*** talked the Jews, he got cancelled because every time they gave him a Chance to clear the air or apologize he just doubled down.

Except ed sheeran would have been torched too but the real point is no matter how much people pretend to care about mental health, they still dont give a s*** until that person is gone

Then they’ll go posting on their ig stories to “check on your friends” and posting colorful suicide hotline infographics

    Synopsis

What major systems is he going against

i mean a few examples that immediately come to mind: "george bush doesn't care about black people" on national television, posting his recording contracts to instagram starting the dialogue on how the music industry is one of the most predatory industries on every marginalised group that participates in it, addressing the blatant racism within the fashion industry, starting uncomfortable dialogue about how the left end of the political spectrum feels it is entitled to the POC vote, etc. i completely understand that he approaches a lot of these delicate and complex issues like a f***ing bull in a china shop but you can't say that he hasn't been pushing back against major systems of power his entire career
