the thing about whataboutery/hypocrisy takes is that its just an argument in favour of getting rid of whatever ur using to make the comparison and in no way justifies or defends what ye did so it's basically meaningless
You see how certain folks are terminally invested in social conformity. No one really cared about Chris Rock in that situation, they only cared that someone would have the audacity to deface that “prestige”. Their sense of control felt that slap just as vividly
F*** the Academy!
You’re right but it all washes away when you remember that Ye had no reason to do any of this. Every somewhat valid point he kinda has in between the bullshit could have been made without inflammatory wording the same way he could have just said “we are all collectively complicit in capitalism” instead of slavery was a choice lol
But this is definitely exposing a lot of hypocrisy. A lot of precedents being set that won’t be followed in the future along with the fact that we’ll never get to the root issue of why disrespect of one group warrants all this but an industry based off the slaughter and trauma of another group fuels a multi million if not billion dollar industry. Jimmy Iovine Lyor Cohen Lucian Grange etc built most of their wealth off the socioeconomic remnants of slavery lol.
Like really consider if Interscope and all the artist it ended up signing exist without Death Row records lol. Then consider the direction that death row and bad boy (Clive Davis) took the industry in when it was at a pivotal point of like Public Enemy type rappers and what direction the genre ended up going after the mid 90’s lol
the thing about whataboutery/hypocrisy takes is that its just an argument in favour of getting rid of whatever ur using to make the comparison and in no way justifies or defends what ye did so it's basically meaningless
Yeah it says a lot that what bothers them the most isn't what Ye said they're more concerned that other billionaires and corporations are hypocrites. Where these people born yesterday? Of course they are but Ye is still wrong both those things can be true
I agree with you. Im not trying to make excuses. I just know how horrible and scary it is when you;re going through it. In my experience it was like i was in a different humans body and i actually thought I died at one point. It was just so surreal and so outside of what i realize was possible for human to experience, it makes me cast aside any judgment of people wiht the same issues. If i had my episodes broadcast to the world and everyone being mean to me about the crazy things i was saying I would have killed myself. I just cant imagine what thats like you know. I want him to get help I just think the making fun of people the disease isn’t the help people need. It hurts the people impacted the the things he says too.
I've witnessed this firsthand with two friends who were bipolar, it's brutal (been a perpetrator of it myself as well being a drunken idiot for a few years there...)
I always empathize with mental illness but you have to hold people accountable for their actions regardless of what they're going through or whatever their mindset is, especially when their actions hurt people. It helps no one otherwise.

Cus what Ye has said is a literal cliff note in a novel of things that happened last week that would necessitate some sort of accountability.
no s*** the things kanye said are so stupid, uninformed and can cause genuine damage. it's a real shame that a Prince / Warhol / Beatles / Bowie level artist and icon is so unapologetic about ruining his generation defining legacy
BUT - lots of "do as i say, not as i do" going on right now.
the talent agency CAA that dropped kanye from their roster in response to this situation is factually proven to have aided harvey weinstein in arranging the private meetings where he would conduct his abuse. but, once a controversial black man uses WORDS, not actions, they kick him to the curb?
adidas has every right to drop Ye. but i think its complete bullshit that they want to drop kanye and be all noble while simultaneously saying "we'll continue to sell yeezy designs without his name on it". so, you don't condone the things the man says, but you DO condone the way his designs can line your pockets?
twitter has every right to remove a man encouraging anti-semitism which is against their rules - makes sense. but why do they currently allow Suhail Shaheen (top Taliban spokesman) to actively use his official account with almost 700k followers - the taliban believe in the forceful prosecution of all Jewish people in the arab world.
don't even get me started on how all of these capitalists, social media infographic-ass-trends and the "who can hold the most social currency" holier-than-thou mentality of western culture is ALWAYS in favor of mental health education and awareness - except when Kanye is involved.
if headlines came out today "ed sheeran has manic episode, says he hates black people in incoherent string of racist tweets - has been purposefully avoiding his prescribed bipolar medications for 2 years", the amy schumer's and gigi hadid's of the world would be posting "Praying for Ed. Mental health matters, I hope he finds the care he needs right now." type bullshit right now on their instagram stories
have the man experience ramifications for irresponsibly abusing one of pop-culture's largest voices? fine, actions should absolutely have consequences. but it really rubs me the wrong way when all these already predatory institutions and societal norms throw all their circumstantial tolerance out the window when a nuanced conversation about mental illness and censorship appears. this situation is being handled so beyond poorly and hypocritically by all parties involved (kanye included).
EDIT:
some people in the thread are taking my ed sheeran a***ogy too literally - i'm trying to make the point that if you put a much more palatable face on the front lines of a major controversy (a white one, perhaps), it would go down with much more empathy and cautiousness than this. all of the major systems kanye has been going against publically for years saw the golden opportunity to wipe him off the map and they are taking it
I love what you’ve said, Kanye is a f***ing idiot but it’s facts that the machine is perpetuating a lot of hypocrisy
Big corps will do anything to look good

It’s all about optics and perceptions. Companies don’t care about morals
Had he been quiet about his views this wouldn’t be happening. Unfortunately for him he can’t keep his pie hole closed

I don’t think it’s a case that many of them don’t care, I think they’ll let you keep your ideals to yourself but the moment you start putting their name into disrepute with values that “supposedly” contradict who they are as a company (and which could touch their profits), then that’s when stuff starts happening.

Shout out to you @huronjohn raw, cohesive thoughts. Bob Dylan skated
Sometimes I feel like ppl be saying s*** about corporate immorality, no ethical consumption etc just to justify their own egregious consumption and immorality tbh
would be the same outcome for just about anyone if they did the exacts ame thing as kanye
also idgaf what companies feel they need to do with a public scandal igaf about kanye having real world ramifications that not only hurt jewish people or whatever but also BLACK PEOPLE

How did it hurt Black people?
Or Jewish people really?
You should obviously know most these companies dont give af either way n only, mainly, cutting toes with Kanye because it is such a huge public upset.
If this was only an under the radar issue he would only be half as punished if that
These companies only gaf about a controversy when its directly related to them in the public eye. Blame Kanye for being so public about his idiocy & blame companies for being so shallow.
He's still wrong regardless & most people being so stupid in the wide open so pubically would & HAVE been treated the same.
Every other issue you mentioned that has actually happned are way more under the radar and little known to the public stories thus theyre not catching any consequence from the major public. Even the spotify CEO invests into military missles & manufacturing, but thats not a common known fact n something Spotify buries.
Be so loud in poublic that you drag others under your name then youre gonna get cut from those youre dragging.
Crazy how it's all over the news when he's losing deals, where was the mainstream media when he was closing them?
Also Kanye is not important enough nor is he/was rich enough as much as yall like to pretend to these gigantic companies to where they will put up with his bulshit & public backlash
He is very small in the pool of billionaires & billion dollar companies that they deal with lmao he's not worth the risk especially since he's so unpredictable & loud on top of it
He's an easy cut off & he's new money. So he doesn't even have seniority. Old money sticks with old money & they dont like the boat rocked with only so few chances of new money to enter the "big boy" club which is a whole social ladder of its own.
A billionaire is alot to a millionaire, it aint s*** to these tens of billions to literally trillions (if you count banks) industries & lineage.
This is a gem hope yall pick up.
Good s*** @op its crazy how nobody else sees the hypocrisy in whats happening rn.
Also,
Kanye has quadrupled down on statements he made which throw any type of sympathy out the window. He’s literally went to seek out platforms that would take him in order to spread his “messages” so please stop
