President Biden has now signed 28 executive orders and submitted some major and possibly controversial proposals to Congress

The President signed 10 orders, mostly related to the coronavirus, on Thursday. A quick list:

    • Mandating a mask in airports and on certain modes of transportation, including many trains, airplanes, maritime vessels and intercity buses. Also requiring proof of a negative COVID-19 test when traveling to the US
    • Creating a COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force to help ensure an equitable pandemic response and recovery
    • Establishing the Pandemic Testing Board to expand US coronavirus testing capacity
    • Directing the Department of Education and HHS to provide guidance for safely reopening and operating schools, childcare providers and institutions of higher education
    • Directing FEMA to create federally-supported community vaccination centers
    • Directing FEMA to expand reimbursement to states to fully cover the cost for National Guard personnel and emergency supplies

The nearly 2 trillion dollar stimulus package, that they’re calling the American Rescue Plan, was sent in to congress Friday. The administration says that the bill, if passed altogether, could create over 7 million jobs this year, remove 12 million Americans from poverty, cut black poverty by 30% and child poverty by 50%

    A short list of contents:

    • Third wave of stimulus checks
    • Increasing weekly unemployment benefits from $300 a week to $400
    • $130 billion for K-12 schools to help them reopen safely. The money is meant to help reach Biden's goal of having a majority of the nation's K-8 schools open within his first 100 days in the White House
    • $20 billion in funding to establish vaccination centers across the country, including in remote areas
    • $50 billion to expand testing and help schools and governments implement routine testing
    • $35 billion to cover pandemic-related expenses and to steer funding to students as emergency grants. An additional $5 billion would go to governors to support programs helping students who were hit hardest by the pandemic
    • $350 billion in emergency funding for state, local and territorial governments to help front-line workers
    • $20 billion in aid to public transit agencies
    • $15 billion in grants to more than 1 million small businesses that have been hit hard by the pandemic
    • Using the Defense Production Act, a Cold War-era law to "maximize the manufacture of vaccine and vaccine supplies for the country."
    • An emergency measure requiring employers to provide paid sick leave. The administration is urging Congress to keep the requirement through Sept. 30 and expand it to federal employees
    • The foundation for raising the minimum wage to $15 nationwide

👆 Will need support from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress

While lawmakers ponder whether the next stimulus is too big or too risky, the president signed 2 more executive orders on Friday focused on giving out direct relief to the poorest Americans and addressing hunger and food insecurity
    • Raising the minimum wage to $15 for employees of the federal government
    • Increasing EBT and SNAP benefits by 15% to 20% for families in need of additional support
    • Directing the Treasury and the IRS to put together the necessary information and assistance so that all eligible people can get stimulus checks that were unclaimed, starting today. As of now 8 million people still haven’t received their checks due to either not filing, not knowing they’re eligible, or not having the correct information on how to get their check
    • Similarly directing the same to the SBA: “Too many of the smallest mom-and-pop shops, typically run by people don't have existing connections to a banking institution, missed out on getting a loan from the federal Paycheck Protection Program last year, Biden said.”
    • Directing the Department of Labor to guarantee that workers can refuse work that would compromise their health, and still receive unemployment benefits

The ambitious immigration reform bill was sent in to Congress on Thursday, and getting passed could be a serious challenge that one Democrat has called "Herculean". To be continued…
    Other stuff
    • Ordered the director of national intelligence to work with the F.B.I. and the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the threat from domestic violent extremism (aka domestic terrorists)
    • They came out against China sanctioning Trump officials, saying that China is trying to play America’s political division
    • Lloyd Austin confirmed secretary of defense

    Not bad at all

So with this new power sharing agreement what is the likelihood we get the new stimulus relief?

Seems like we’re really looking at March now

So much for the congressional majority

Bottom line up front, Mitch still has some power baby.. he can still stall things

This power was agreed on which is confusing because it didn’t have to be this way with the Dems taking the senate/house majority

    How has McConnell 'taken control'?

You realise the Senate is split 50-50 right?

My interpretation is he’s lobbying for soft power under the guise of a sharing agreement that isn’t necessary

Why agree to share power when you fought aggressively to take both the house and the senate to be able to move forward with your agenda without objections

There is no sharing agreement. He's minority leader just as there is always a minority leader.

But ultimately they are tied 50-50. There's a legislative filibuster which requires all 50 of the Dem caucus to be onboard to remove. But there's 3 who aren't currently.

With that safety net in place, in order to agree upon a new Organizing Resolution, McConnell has agreed to move forward without a formal agreement on not removing the filibuster.
