can you like, look at the years
so things that happened 100 years ago don't effect today? so slavery doesn't matter?

no one said that. but that doesn't mean that here today, in 1921, that the US is not engaged in imperialism to a higher degree than any nation.
You are an exception, not a rule. There are thousands, perhaps millions, in your exact situation who failed and we will never hear about, due to circumstances beyond their control, especially those who do not live in America, but instead in the global south and every day live with the cloud of imperialism over their heads. Is capitalism working for them? And every socialist government has improved the lives of the people over what they previously had, despite the constant efforts of America and other western nations in insuring that doesn't happen.
Is there evidence their countries can't ever catch up to the living standards in the west? Like every country has it's own history and sociopolitical issues which can hold it back. It's not really possible to say they can't reach similar living standards will allow people even of lower class to succeed .
I recognize my luck of growing up in America versus here due to my parents situation where PhDs in their country drive cabs. However I'm sharing and relating my story to my life as American immigrant and not including other countries around the world because i don't have that reference point/experience.
There's plenty of things holding back the rest of the undeveloped world though. Too many things to say so I get why the idea of a nationless one huge communist/socialist humanity is attractive and ideal to people.
First world nations in NATO/G7 which continue to exploit weaker nations are also not free from criticism here, don't get me wrong. The IMF is pretty f***ed.
The world is filled with nations which compete against eachother, the argument of whether capitalism fuels this is there.
But at the end of the day, I have a limited time on this earth and I want to do whats best for me and the people who I love and love me.
My time and efforts will be spent based on taking care of them and my how live my life is dictated by this.
I'll let my children grow up better off than me to ponder these things and see if they can ever have the influence to improve the system. Essentially raise them to be better human beings and less worried about capital/money.
It's not a coincidence many far left/socialists are academics and born into higher income brackets. They can afford to spend their lives and time pondering these things. Many people who work for nonprofits come from very privledge backgrounds and furloughed more lucrative careers because their parents have money. There's divergence in the kinds of 'rich' which exist imo.
I wasn't afforded this luxury so I have to work. The thing is though where we differ is I think succeeding under the current system is more probable than what a socialist might think.
You say I'm an exception, well yes I am. I think what allowed me to succeed was a strong functional household of my immigrant family which pushed me to stay on a good path. Same with my fiance, her siblings, our cousins, etc.
We really had no money at all growing up. Personally me I grew up in pretty rough spot of NY and most of my peers didn't reach my level of income by now. But I also understand the homelives of my peers growing up was very different. I believe though strongly that within a capitalist system many more people like my peers can reach the same success. I don't think the current socioeconomic barriers they face HAVE to exist within a capitalistic system, and I think reforms CAN occur. Its different for every country to due to factors that go beyond economics like race, history, geographic factors, and many other things.
The question you pose was why aren't I socialist, and I can answer it based on these things. I cannot tell other people why they should/shouldn't be socialists I do not know their situation.

The thing holding back these underdeveloped countries is the massive level of exploitation they've gone through in the past century and a half or so
And the idea that most socialists are well off academics is just a wildly confused notion. Ahistorical and even today just flat wrong
China is the country that it is today because of the CCP and Mao Zedong
USSR won the space race.
They were both backwards, semifuedal countries which were battered from imperialism and capitalist exploitation's Socialism works and massively industrialized these countries 🤷🏼♂️
Not going to happen the same way on the same course. How the f*** is Niger going to stop being a resource colony from France while still being capitalist.

Washington Post, Remembering the biggest mass murder in the history of the world, "Mao emerges as one of the greatest mass murderers in history... When a boy stole a handful of grain in a Hunan village, local boss Xiong Dechang forced his father to bury him alive. The father died of grief a few days later"

Mao and Stalin were good
One lifted a semifuedal nation out of poverty and kicked the japanese imperialists' ass
Another single handedly wooped the Nazis and made major industrial progress.
Some policies didn't work. Ok. We can critically support

Yeah if you think Mao was out here ordering 80 million people to their deaths ive got two bridges to sell you
The whole 56 trillion people died under Mao number comes from the Heritage Foundation which has never been able to give any evidence to this number being accurate. Yet almost every western site uses these numbers for some reason.
They used to say that their research is based on the classified CIA documents only they have access to. However, all relevant CIA documents in that era have been declassified.
On the contrary, CIA documents say China had a population increase during the years of Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution.
