medicine bros do SSRis really work? not considering taking them but i was just wondering what yall thought
Hm I've seen it praised like crazy thats why i have it in my cart
Tbh the more this kind of book is praised by the mainstream the more you should be skeptical of it. Otherwise you'd be out here reading Niall Ferguson and Steven Pinker
There's a lot of books that try to explain the great divergence and naturally most of them are written from a liberal perspective, some of them are worth reading (Escape From Rome, Why The West Rules For Now) but Diamond is not one of those guys.
Here's a good review of Diamond which summarizes some of the problems with his book and columbia.edu/~lnp3/mydocs/Blaut/diamond.htm
I like this relatively short paper on the Great Divergence

Only heard negative things about it and the first chapter I read was awful. I like "Why The West Rules, For Now" better
beyond the editorialization/commentary by the author the main points are exactly what your post says
Ive been meaning to pull the trigger on this, any good?
i wouldn't say its a good book but if you can separate editorial commentary from historical a***ysis then the underlaying points made in the book are basically identical to what the post i quoted says - i.e. the importance of natural resources , geography , and biodiversity in historical determination.

There is laughter because there is nothing to laugh at. Laughter, whether conciliatory or terrible, always occurs when some fear passes. It indicates liberation either from physical danger or from the grip of logic. Conciliatory laughter is heard as the echo of an escape from power; the wrong kind overcomes fear by capitulating to the forces which are to be feared. It is the echo of power as something inescapable. Fun is a medicinal bath. The pleasure industry never fails to prescribe it.
“Amusement always means putting things out of mind, forgetting suffering, even when it is on display.”
white folks love that quote especially the new atheists
its hilarious that he's actually advocating for both religion and d**** in actuality
I was surprised by the lack of people calling the protests in Iran a "color revolution" but they're finally appearing on my timeline
It's a-priori that social unrest in these countries is manufactured, they never support any protest movement happenening in these regions. To them any American attempt to control the movement is proof the movement is controlled. Nobody in these countries has any agency or grievances.
It's been pointed out before but these are the same arguments used by opponents of the French Revolution, German Revolution, Russian Revolution, Colonial Indepence movements, etc. It's an incredibly reductive and simplified view of the dynamics of political movements.
