The DPRK also shares a border with the f***ing PRC
That has been a huge factor in why the DPRK has sustained even with China helping to facilitate a lot of the sanctions post USSR collapse
Cuba doesn’t have the same privilege
You can’t be serious
Ok, and the DPRK throughout the better part of 20 years were totally cut off from the world in part because of South Korea but also in large part because of Chinese sanctions. What’s your point
Cuba has far more access to international trade and markets. As far as internal maoist self-criticism is concerned, there's little excuse for conditions to still be this bad.
And even if you personally think China is still working towards a socialist project
Russia
Iran
India
Are not socialists.
If you want market reforms with a incomplete socialist base then tell Cuba to just be more like Venezuela
India in particular is the cancer of brics first and foremost
The question is not whether or not BRICS has a socialist base, its whether BRICS can expand to the point that it contains so much of global trade that US blockades and sanctions become entirely ineffective.
embarassing stuff. the dprk is also not a brics member and also has a socialist economy in scale with cuba so im not sure why you brought them up. you can't just project whatever nonsense you're saying onto them.
This isn't hard snowboy. Cuba has historically had it relatively easier than North Korea, and many other countries that have been destroyed by the US
cuba will finally reach its full potential by going to a yearly meeting where 9 countries pretend they're cool with the way china drew its borders on the map
@999Wrld since you deleted your post -
We're in a communism thread, have a nuanced take for once. Yes, it's an island country completely blockaded from the global economy, but the Cuban people deserve better than making excuses for bad government decisions.
The DPRK is far more sanctioned than Cuba and it leads the world in military technical advancements. Also isn't infiltrated with American NGOs, lol https://www.fordfoundation.org/news-and-stories/stories/cubas-next-generation-of-progress/
This isn't about "some innate failure of the Cuban dictatorship of the proletariat", this is about it not yet aligning closer with Russia and China.
Yea Cuba investing in military technology would definitely help the people of Cuba more than developing healthcare and education

you’re almost there, just shorten “more than developing” to “develop”👍

DPRK is going to spend more on military than a lot of countries since it has the most militarized border on Earth with essentially an satellite of its biggest enemy
You can’t really compare it to Cuba’s military development in that aspect

You can compare their levels of self-sufficiency. Sanctions make for a good excuse to become self-sustaining.
A resource rich country like Cuba has enough petroleum to where they wouldn't have to import it if they just developed it themselves. They also have far more arable farmland than North Korea does, while still being similar in size. They could also generate exponential leverage in the electricity and tech sectors with the amount of copper manganese etc. that it holds as well.
cuba opening their markets would just be spreading their cheeks for american private interests
they arent china and they dont have a number of the factors that allowed china to develop relatively independently
Toronto we got work to do

might be controversial but i dont vibe with anti-military sentiments not informed by socialist outlook. youre just hating on poor people with ptsd like they aint humans

assuming you're talking about the modern american military, it is primarily upper-middle class and white by design. I dont really care about their well-being and as for "PTSD", this is a very good and illuminating book.

its one of many attempts to pathologize capitalist alienation/resistance (a la railway spine, hysteria, ADD, etc.).

actually i wasnt thinking about western armies even though their methods of recruiting i think follow the same formula (a poor person chance at a career and benefits). like in russia theyre just drafting poor people or dudes thinking its a cakewalk and then they return shell shocked unable to live as regular folk anymore. theyre dummies for doing that in the first place but ngl i dont have much hate in my heart for them knowing how this thing goes

to be fair they are conscripts so its a different scenario. obviously I think the current war in Ukraine is reactionary but a lot of these guys really do want the USSR back and when the war is over and the Russian ruling class has nothing to offer them, I do wonder what will happen. it does feel like another WWI moment.

been thinking about what the war is going to do to russian society lately what type of conditions this puts them in especially now that there’s fighting on russian soil proper
gotten far enough to understand the basis for this book is just essentially an affirmation of marx’s position and theory of one’s social experience and outcome is a direct result of their economic position because in the capitalist mode of production the proletariat has to work to live because the alternative would be homelessness/starving which not being subjected to those things is the basis of being able to pursue other ventures you might be interested in to complete a life of fulfillment, my first book from eagleton and will def be going deeper into his catalog after this!

what’s ur basis on a lot of them wanting the ussr back

I mean won't the US just immediately invade Cuba the second that happens

I never said they should be just like Cuba I understand their different situations but tbh it's still kinda over hyped I don't think bts is gonna be any good in an invasion
I wish there was better middle ground between being a cultist for Mao/Stalin/Gonzalo and being a complete revisionist. Western communists on the Internet are like a mental asylum
