i doubt that the researchers defined this specifically. if they were using neural networks or similar, then likely what they did is submit a ton of images of applicants each tagged with political positions (i.e. a picture of 100 conservatives + a picture of 100 liberals). the network then finds (not in a literal sense, but abstractly) similarities between the pictures and uses those similarities to deduce if others fit a similar mold

you can imagine if they just put in like 3000 pictures of blue collar hard laborers who were conservative and then 3000 pictures of NYT journalists what kinda conclusion its gonna draw
