Who gets profit cuts in movies? I always thought the studio pays fixed amounts and takes profit
I don’t know if they get away with it anymore but they used to use it to take advantage of people unfamiliar with the industry. I think where I’ve seen it most often is if someone sells movies rights for their life or a book they wrote or something. The studio will offer something like $200k + 3% of profits. Then they’ll constantly inflate the cost of the film after release so it never makes a profit.
At least that’s my understanding.
Edit: there’s a whole Wikipedia article detailing it that I can’t paste because my phone just ran out of storage. Look up “Hollywood Accounting”

I really don’t get why Spotify hasn’t tried to become a 21st century label and disrupt the industry. I’m sure there’s smart people over there and they’ve run the numbers and the risk doesn’t outweigh the reward. But them and the artists could both make more per stream if they just cut out the label. They could offer their own advances and provide marketing for almost nothing on their own platform and social media and also provide playlist placements.
They’ve already started doing this to an extent by buying podcasts

labels won't let them I assume
Spotify still NEEDS the major labels to license to them
in 5-10 years if we see a lot of independent artists that could change
but for now Spotify are gonna keep their head down and stay on the good side of labels
take what you need! if you need studio time, equipment etc then go for it
but view it as a loan cause thats what it is
My whole thing is if I’m Kanye I know it’s people begging to work with me for the low. Hell I’ll cut out the middle man and buy my own studio/equipment. I can see younger artist not established taking the advance because they truly need it but not Ye.

Kanye doesnt even really need a record label at all at this point
You forgot the Yeezus Lost Tapes

That’s a really good point I hadn’t considered. There’s likely some sort of non-compete clause in the contracts Spotify has with the labels. And if there isn’t there’s a general understanding that if Spotify attempts to encroach on their business that the labels will go nuclear and pull all their music from the service.
