I've seen this term but dont really know what it means

Does anyone? A quick google showed an in depth rolling stone article (idk if they're a good source) basically saying its payola

Lets take kanyes next "singles" according to ye sxn, off the grid and something else i forgot

They're saying it "impacts" radio next week

What does that mean? Its being "sent" to radio?

So established mainstream artists just get to "send" their songs to radio and thats it?

Clearly remember a tweet from 2013 yeezus era that was from some industry dude saying "if kanye is doing no singles why did def jam just service me a clean kanye west single to add to radio?"

It appears as tho its not just radio adding their songs, the label "SENDS" the radio the song to play

That doesnt explain anything just adds another term

    "Serviced to radio"

  • This became so abundantly clear to me when I heard that Like An Astronaut In The Ocean song on local radio

It means labels pay radio stations to add the song to their rotation. If their listeners keep requesting the song to be played after it’s been added, the radio station keeps the song in rotation.

    Dont get it misunderstood

Radio will obviously play the new kanye off the strength

But if a song is being serviced/sent to radio after its already been out, what does that mean? The radio didnt choose to play it. They got the record sent to them to play it

Labels pay radio stations. Thats what i was looking for.

    Direct, clear, obvious answer

How did payola become a non issue?

Even the rolling stone article says the industry is relaxed when it comes to payola now

the idea of "they'll play the it off the strength" is just not true. Yeezus was not a commercial album and if the label wasn't sending songs out and paying them a sum of money they'd be s*** outta luck expecting radios stations to play it. every label pays for radio, at least a little.

I think they spin the record for some time,if the listeners have a positive reception they will keep playing it,if not they remove them

payola never became a non-issue cus it never became an issue it's an inherent, intrinsic part of the entertainment industry

Payola is illegal whether everybody does it or not

If everybody made it a bigger issue it would be a bigger issue. Nobody cares so it gets a pass

Rolling stone did an indepth investigation on it very recently
