omg
fam the issue you're speaking to has been going on for like 70 years on a medium that started dying like 20 years ago
U think this is a new issue or u just bored & old enough now to sit around & actually ponder this s*** ?
that being said this comes from a place of love & i want you to know that. you cooked my ass i love that energy esp from a legend
All love btw but dont be condescending with me
Especially if i already know what ur saying
I know its an old issue nothing i said implies its new...at all
Im sorry are we only allowed to discuss new s*** here?
I made the thread cos i saw ye sxn talk about new kanye songs being sent to radio next week
I thought "i always see that term used. Are they really that blatant with the payola"
Thats it. Not really a big deal. Then u come in here like "OMMGGGGG THATS ANCIENT U PREHISTORIC F*** WTF THIS IS SUCH OLD NEWS WTF MAN"
the answer is yeah they are that blatant it's just a funny thread it's like worrying kids are spending too much time watching tv & they're eyes are gonna go square or something
if we were gonna bring the thread into this century maybe theres a discourse to be had about the insidious nature payola affects songs trending on tiktok, even then the answer is yes man its all shameless corrupt bullshit the way its always been idk what you want illuminated
labels send artists songs to radio for radio spins.
songs dont really get radio play if theyre not sent to radio. for example, here is the estimated numbers for clb's first week
as you can see, the AIRPLAY field for Drake's songs are extremely low (outside of Way 2 Sexy which was sent to radio first week). This is why alot of songs with huge first weeks (ex when albums drop), drop off the SINGLES chart first week, as they dont have the airplay to keep steady. radio does not effect album chart, so u wont see tha t there.
if a song is sent to radio, its a single 99% of the time
All love btw but dont be condescending with me

id never even dream of it big bro i know the foodchain on here lets not get that twisted 🤞

i dunno if id call it "payola". maybe because its just standard practice at this point.
with the amount of music released (especially in digital age) itd be hard for a radio show to play everything, so label sends them the songs that they are currently pushing (the singles)
It is not Payola. Many songs get sent to radio and never get played. It's a prerequisite for payola, but not payola itself.

Wait until OP finds out Dr. Dre used other producers to make a lot of his beats.
Label doing every thing they can to force a hit
Labels trying to make a return on investment. Damn u just invented capitalism
Mad exciting that Kanye is being promoted tho, even though I think two singles on separate formats is dumb.
Radio dead anyway
Nah it kept blinding lights alive for months
Radio dead anyway
It factors into the Billboard Hot 100 and artists want accolades.
Good thread OP ive been wondering the same thing. Glad we can have a real discussion once in a while
actually just update thread title to spotify playlists if you wanna have a thread about the present
Nah it kept blinding lights alive for months
And that Bieber song with Daniel Caesar
Radio dead anyway
Not as long as they get billboard to keep giving them more power vs streaming and purchases
Yeah probably 80% of the songs you hear on the radio have been sent in by the radio, and stations are paid off to play specific songs are certain amount of times in a block and day. None of this is new. It's likely been going on since...shit imma say the 90s, but probably earlier, I'm only going off of the timeframe I know best.

You also have hits likes "Shut Up" from Black Eyed Peas that flopped in the USA but dominated overseas due to not being released in the U.S.
I believe the same happened with a song on Watch The Throne too.
What’s so hard to understand?
Thought radio payola wasnt legal. So sending to radio just means paying em? Or is it just telling radios "hey we are pushing this as the single heres the clean version"

It's just like how studios like Disney get good reviews. They don't exactly pay them with money they just trade favors and get exclusive info, free tickets on shows they want to go to, press access and interviews for artists, all that extra stuff to get around being called "payola" but basically the same thing. Payola is paying money directly and that might still happen but no one is enforcing it like they should
