Thought radio payola wasnt legal. So sending to radio just means paying em? Or is it just telling radios "hey we are pushing this as the single heres the clean version"
Radio stations don't have the music to play themselves, the music is literally sent to stations by labels. This is the most dumbass question i have ever seen on here and I cant believe this has more than 1 page.
People calling this payola have no clue what payola even is, its just ignorant children saying s*** to say it
Dont get it misunderstood
Radio will obviously play the new kanye off the strength
But if a song is being serviced/sent to radio after its already been out, what does that mean? The radio didnt choose to play it. They got the record sent to them to play it
When the label sends the song to radio, it means it's the new single

the latter

What is a single in 2021? Post album I mean
Every song off donda, for example, can already be purchased as a single
Usually a music video means "its a single and we're marketing it"
But literally what makes a song a single if it was already able to be purchased as a single and no new music video comes out?

Single is a song that is chosen to promote the album. They are sent to radio, get music videos, performances on TV...
kinda off topic but I don't think at matters as much nowadays as it did before streaming
crazy how back then official singles were the only songs that charted on Billboard100 even if the album was HUGE
none of the GRODT songs outside of official singles even hit top 100 while the actual singles were all top 10
crazy
Still D.R.E. peaked at #99
I refuse to believe it actually was a flop
and now a whole album can absolutely takeover the Hot 100 chart
so seems like it's much more organic nowadays
obviously playlists is the new payola but chances are an independent artist can reach the top are much higher these days

Theres been plenty of songs that came off an album already released with no video or tv performances and the only reason they called it a single is because they sent it to radio tho
Anyway the main point of the thread is labels or someone involved in an artists team are paying someone to get music on radio. Its been known but i find it interesting how blatant it is yet nobody will come out and admit whats happening
GWG was CLB 2nd single look at its radio vs knife talk.
Knife talk just got sent as third single recently
kinda off topic but I don't think at matters as much nowadays as it did before streaming

Still dre peaked at 99 but probably sold a bunch of units if it was released as a single
I wouldnt say things are more organic now tho. Drake occupying 9 out of 10 billboard top 10 then 8 out of those songs drastically drop says something
I may be wrong but im pretty sure we didn't use to have so many songs freefalling from the charts
Ye it happened but now its very very common

It's not obligatory to perform on TV or make music videos of singles

singles 100% still matter for chart longevity
I know its an old issue nothing i said implies its new...at all
Im sorry are we only allowed to discuss new s*** here?
I made the thread cos i saw ye sxn talk about new kanye songs being sent to radio next week
I thought "i always see that term used. Are they really that blatant with the payola"
Thats it. Not really a big deal. Then u come in here like "OMMGGGGG THATS ANCIENT U PREHISTORIC F*** WTF THIS IS SUCH OLD NEWS WTF MAN"
Ayo Was drdre always this spicy on ktt1?
Pretty sure label pay for their artists songs to be on the radio. If the listeners like it, it’ll get more plays naturally. Even if they don’t, it’s gonna be shoved down their throats anyway until they do.
singles 100% still matter for chart longevity
they do but they are not dependent solely on radio plays anymore
it's how many times radio stations play the song vs how many times actual people play the song
Labels pay radio stations. Thats what i was looking for.
Direct, clear, obvious answer
How did payola become a non issue?
Even the rolling stone article says the industry is relaxed when it comes to payola now
No they don’t. That’s illegal.

I was wayyyyyyy more reckless on ktt1 ive mellowed out a lot. I dont start anything. He was being condescending so i jabbed back
You're naive
Do you know how many radio stations there are in the US. If every label was paying every station for a every song that gets played then that would be a giant fkn criminal conspiracy that the FBI would sniff out almost immediately.
Now there are definitely “arrangements” and stations wanting to stay in the good graces of the labels. Like if you don’t play the song then you’re risking not getting anymore interviews from artists on that label. Or tickets to give away when their tour comes to town.
But money isn’t exchanging hands like y’all think it is.

Ok but who cares??? It's not 1996

Some songs get heavy radio play while people dont stream it that much.
