no such thing as “ruining a legacy”

I hate when people say xyz only happens in (insert community) when it clearly doesn’t, that’s just what you’re only familiar with

If you google artists that ruined their legacy hip hop doesn’t even make the first pages

bro it doesn’t matter what the f*** a critic gotta say man

if critics panned WLR and Die Lit, would Carti no longer be influential or responsible for an entire wave of music? would his legacy be hurt? the music speaks for itself versus whatever a critic tries to say

Ok good for them? This is a music forum so we discuss the totality of music and that includes looking at an artists body of work to evaluate them. That has nothing to do with stats or sports.

Great bands have put out trash and been forgotten throughout history and their bad work is what’s remembered. This is ruining a legacy. When your bad work is what sticks in your fans’ heads more than the good.

You were one of the main ones in the Kendrick vs drake thread now you don’t see how hip hop is a competition?

And I just told you and showed you that this is not just hip hop. You’re doing this thing where someone will say “only black people whoop their kids!” to seem “in the know” but you’re blatantly wrong.

no, this thread is about cherry-picking some awful songs out of Eminem’s catalog to paint this narrative that he ruined his “legacy” and it holds him back from being a GOAT

i don’t give two s***s about a body of work like that, it’s a very small facet of an artist in the grand scheme of things, i care about an artists’ peak and that’s it, looking at an artists catalog and making sure to incorporate their bad work to hurt their GOAT case genuinely does not move me in any sort of way

Chuck Berry and Little Richard aren’t even known as great album artists, and yet they were also massively influential and helped pioneer rock

music is way deeper than who put out more good music and who put out more bad music, if you want to evaluate music so soullessly like that, be my guest, but im gonna call it out for what it is, which is just Twitter brained nonsense looking at music like it’s sports

bro what are you talking about

you just googled some articles saying there’s niggas saying that X and Y bands tarnished their legacies, critics don’t view music the same way as fans do

of course a critic is going to be trying to pore through a band’s works searching for albums that aren’t on par with their peak to discredit them, the point is that FANS do not do that s*** like that, and it’s highly overstated in genres like hip-hop due to its association with s*** like basketball

Rival was so bad that kamakazi was a step in the right direction.. then mtbmb was even better but of course he always has a few songs that are ruined with bad instrumentals or bad hooks. Not a like could've been great if it wasnt for that hook

The funny thing is when delusional Drake stans start talking about artists and who’s dropped more trash singles. Eminem will be fine Drake's list of corny songs is like four times longer than what OP posted.

At least Eminem doesn’t fake it like Drake, thinking he's a mob boss with painted nails smh. Ems actually from Detroit and never rapped like a mob boss lol.

Drake a Canadian culture vulture from Toronto it doesn’t get any cornier. Now we know (after the battle) who the real Vanilla Ice is and it sure ain’t Em, it's Drake.

Delusional Drake stans need to stay quiet, especially after the battle with Kendrick. The whole world’s laughing at his b**** ass.

Bet Drake's latest weedplate alone has more trash songs on it than the list OP posted about Eminem.

This doesn't really happen in rock lol. I mean maybe for certain bands

For example, Green Day is still considered one of the most influential pop punk bands of all time even though the majority of their catalogue is terrible. Everyone knows about The Ramones but everything after Richie Ramone left it went to s***. The Kings of Leon, The Strokes, Muse, etc.

Just because the artist puts out trash now doesn't invalidate their previous work. I mean just look at Ye. Are folks going to argue that he isn't one of the best hip hop artists of all time because his recent work is nowhere near the caliber of his first 5 albums? Graduation is still one of the most played rap albums to THIS DAY

Yeah but everyone can almost agree on his fall off , some pinpoint Pablo some a bit later on, it's clear ye ain't the same guy man, what are we doing here. Em is not the same, f*** a younger guy like chance ruined his legacy with that stinker in real time. And for a long time, KOD was deemed a huge disappointment but Cole is Cole 🤢🤮. Point is, rap is a very unforgiving landscape, them niggas know it too. I love em but he wouldn't be rehashing an old persona if he didn't know how he ruined his s*** with kamikaze and them

he knows that he’s just grasping at straws because he knows he sounds dumb as s***

like imagine trying to evaluate a punk band off the quality of their albums alone versus their live performances and overall influence that they brought to their scenes

the issue is that people have essentially placed albums on this invincible pedestal where apparently your entire value as an artist hinges on it, which is so disconnected from reality it boggles the mind

someone like Zappa used to put out ALL types of crazy unserious s*** in between spurts of serious work because he didn’t view albums as something that important plus he was also that good

I'm saying the fall off doesn't invalidate the legacy. Not a lot of artists have perfect discographies, and I'm not arguing about any of all that. The first thought that pops into my head when I pres play on The Eminem Show isn't "My experience is ruined by how bad Revival is" it's "Wow Em is really rapping his ass off on this"

Chance is not even close to the same stage as the people we're talking about. I'm talking legends/highly influential artists. Chano dropped a few good mixtapes and an okay album. Not even in the same discussion.

But thr point remains that irregardless, somewhere after he came back, Ems quality dropped man, I don't get it with yall, like ye of vultures is not the same nigga who made my beautiful dark twisted fantasy. There's a clear point where it's like yeah this s*** ruins it. Your experience being ruined future albums is a different topic and one I'm not talking about, my point there are legacy stinkers. It doesn't mean thier fall off but it reflects on their overall legacy
