Mainland China only recently became a big chip manufacturer (which has to serve their domestic interests first) and even they relied on Taiwan prior to sanctions that forced them to look inwards

I understand the insistence on making this solely about semiconductors since that’s the US’s and many Americans only major reason for why they care about something that has little to do with the nation. And no that comparison is off too because as far as I know, popular opinion in hawaii doesn't favour independence, and hawaii isn't an independent state

Because Hawaii has been colonized by American settlers, natives want independence. Hawaii has a much stronger case for independence since it was actually a sovereign state before, unlike Taiwan which itself even regards its territory part of China, just that they should rule all of it.

Taiwan was a military dominated state well into the 90s, their "democracy" is like 20 years old
