If only people knew that major film program curriculums in the country just aggresively hammer commercial appeal and industry trends into students' heads
@WASHINGTON let em kno
i started with mirror and it’s one of my favorites of all time
That must have been wild was it your first Russian film too?

Yup
had to hit it with a rewatch the very next day, but off the bat i was in love with it. have yet to see anything that feels similar to it
Don't think any other film is so jam packed with so many genius/stunning little moments

Tried to dissect it in a letterboxd review, needed a rewatch

I was gonna do chronologic order to see progression of his style but mirror looks nutty
Some people itt probably prefer the George Clooney Version of Solaris
Unironically yes
But not by much. Tark's is still great, though its his weakest major film in my eyes
Considering there’s only like 7, it’s kinda crazy Criterion hasn’t just released a full box set.
Sacrifice is my favorite. The film benefits from watching the rest of his filmography first tho and getting a greater understanding of his artistic voice.
Ivan is probably the best place to start then move on to Andrei Rublev. After Rublev, you can probably skip around and watch any. Nostalghia is my favorite Tarkovsky film, and I think it’s definitely what is considered boring. However, I think Tark does this on purpose because boredom/ennui is something that anyone faces in real life for months at a time. The three characters definitely feel boredom strongly in Nostalghia because they’re waiting for something to happen or come to them due to their external circumstances of exile they all face.

i see what you saying
TARKOVSKY IS A SCULPTOR OF TIME
Time and the pace of a movie is what he works with.
To create this superstrange vibe that is present in each of his movie.
The fact that he probably died because of where he shot Stalker shows me that the craft and quality of each of his scenes was taken to the maximum.
Putting his own health on the line
If you not invested in his movie you will fall asleep but miss out on a lot.
Some viewers got their Eyes Wide Shut , No Kubrick.

Ps: the edit of his movies are unfuckwithable
All of his films are 4 stars and above but Solaris feels like a mishandled attempt to compete against 2001 which ironically he found cold and clinical despite ultimately doing the same and Nostalgia almost felt like self parody. Mirror and Sacrifice are the full blown masterpieces for me.
