AI won't change much with development just shift the demand further away from CRUD development
chatGPT is on the job effectively just a superior version of stack overflow, it still can't handle things devs are necessary for like codebases.
deleted the post my bad
but gotcha. if anything the development of AI will be used as a tool to automate simple tasks. and like @bitch_mob said, people who adapt to industry standards will stay sharp
So glad I backed out Google. No layoffs at my company yet, but we will probably not be getting much if any on bonuses and raises.
I was in the middle of hiring for a product a***yst role before they froze things
wouldn't even know tbh
Don’t, all this RDOF funding has a ton of money for ISPs and for companies that help and manage the infrastructure. Tech is still booming just in a different sector.
Might be time to start seriously getting back into IT
where do you recommend starting?
salesforce got 5 months of severance for their layoffs like ngl id take that s*** and take at least a month off to soul search n s***
buuuut i have no kids, single and just a pet so i speak from a privileged standpoint
Networking or Security
where do i start with certifications and what not?

CCNA/Network+ for networking and Security+ for security are pretty decent starts. Neither guarantee a job by any means, but I got a good security position with just the Sec+.

I don’t have any. Just a comp Sci degree.

I haven't done IT since I worked for my college over a decade ago :jordancry:
But it's blown up since then and there's too many lanes for me to cover in a single post, but starting here might be helpful:
thanks everyone if you don’t mind me asking have most of the networking/security roles you’ve taken been remote or in office?
thanks everyone if you don’t mind me asking have most of the networking/security roles you’ve taken been remote or in office?
I'm allowed to do both. I work in the field a lot too.
My company had tons of people laid off but I survived but scared it could happen to me any moment
thanks everyone if you don’t mind me asking have most of the networking/security roles you’ve taken been remote or in office?
Remote for sure. No need to be in an office for my role.
i’m currently in school for networking but with AI popping off, do you guys fear what the future holds for CS and the other sectors of IT? even for engineering jobs, years ago these jobs were seen as the most secure but now it’s hard to say what the future holds
we are very early in the development of AI and it’s capabilities are so impressive
no, just a bunch of horseshit. ai will not replace your job. just a bunch of ed ass libertarians saying that s***. just a huge circlejerk that went from crypto, to nft, to web3 / blockchain, and now to "hur chatgpt!". will not do anything to people who have specialized knowlewdge
Might be time to start seriously getting back into IT
That's what I'm doing, tbh. Going through and getting some certs
thanks everyone if you don’t mind me asking have most of the networking/security roles you’ve taken been remote or in office?
bruh dont just randomly pick networking or security cuz some random dude told you. learn about the industry first and all the different types of roles. there are sooo many roles:
if you're more of a in-job people person you could do HR/Recruiting
if you're more visual and like creating and strategizing the product, product design / ux design (user experience designer)
if you want to help shape products, good thinker, deadliner, people person, politic-er: product management...
if you like figuring out why products may not work they way they should, and how to fix them ... UX research
SWE.. build the product the designers hand off to you..
data scientist.. market researcher... system admins... security...
sooooo much different s***.. do what makes you happy.
i love coding but couldn't do it as a career -- cuz i wanted to be more upfront in the strategy of the product cuz ima thinker. chose to be a UX researcher. still make just as much money as SWE..
here's a lot of job titles and their salaries: levels.fyi/t
