Thanks. I already have a really cozy job at a tech giant so I'm not really stressing tbh, was just hoping this was the year I could finally make a big career jump

I feel yeah, was hoping to do that too.
I'm just going to hone in on my skills and stay put for awhile until things get better

My company got acquired at the beginning of last quarter so I survived the main lay off wave. However, I have this impending doom in the back of my mind that I will get laid off any day now..

My friend that works at one of the Salesforce companies said they're starting lay offs now.

So glad I backed out Google. No layoffs at my company yet, but we will probably not be getting much if any on bonuses and raises.

you got an offer from them?

bruh dont just randomly pick networking or security cuz some random dude told you. learn about the industry first and all the different types of roles. there are sooo many roles:
if you're more of a in-job people person you could do HR/Recruiting
if you're more visual and like creating and strategizing the product, product design / ux design (user experience designer)
if you want to help shape products, good thinker, deadliner, people person, politic-er: product management...
if you like figuring out why products may not work they way they should, and how to fix them ... UX research
SWE.. build the product the designers hand off to you..
data scientist.. market researcher... system admins... security...

sooooo much different s***.. do what makes you happy.
i love coding but couldn't do it as a career -- cuz i wanted to be more upfront in the strategy of the product cuz ima thinker. chose to be a UX researcher. still make just as much money as SWE..

here's a lot of job titles and their salaries: https://www.levels.fyi/t

real for this post. figure out what's best for you @atthepyramids and what you have more interest in.

trying to transition into UX Design, since I'm more visual than logical and it grabs my attention longer

I was spared from google layoffs, unfortunately. Burned out and would have loved to have taken that severance and have a couple months off, paid. Job search for me would have been seamless and easy regardless if I was laid off or not anyways.

CCNA/Network+ for networking and Security+ for security are pretty decent starts. Neither guarantee a job by any means, but I got a good security position with just the Sec+.

I have my security+, i have a job that I enjoy but curious what sort of roles should I look for with a security+ if I wanted to switch?

i’m currently in school for networking but with AI popping off, do you guys fear what the future holds for CS and the other sectors of IT? even for engineering jobs, years ago these jobs were seen as the most secure but now it’s hard to say what the future holds

we are very early in the development of AI and it’s capabilities are so impressive

I think for now, the future is heading toward integration. As long as you're getting with the times you should be fine.

Fr I got out of the startup world and into a govt adjacent job cuz something like this had to have been coming

  • Jan 21, 2023

If I did get laid off, I could probably find a job reasonably quick since it's needed in every industry and not just tech

I’m fortunately unaffected, but this was coming after the worst year in tech stocks since 99.
