not f***ing with the mass shooter song at all. should've left that to Foster the People
matty be writing like hmmm let's see how many times i can make them, and myself, cringe
Happiness’ is where we acknowledged that there was a certain lyrical and sonic identity to what The 1975 was. We felt like it wouldn’t be a ’75 record if we didn’t have a song that owned what we did best. The thing is, we weren’t actually very ’80s; we just used loads of sounds that grunge and Britpop made unfashionable because they were associated with Phil Collins or whoever, but we were like, ‘No, that sounds better than that.’ It’s a live record, so there’s a lot of call-and-response, a lot of repetition, because we were in the room, jamming.
“Happiness is like… there’s literally loads of us in the room on that track. Locked eyes… doesn’t really have much structure. It came through like jamming. And we haven’t done that in like years. So we just wanted this record to be really like a captured moment and not be too constructed and even produced that much…. We did it in like a day or so. And it’s us having fun. And I think that there’s this real desire in art to see something remarkable with as little technology as possible.”
see, this is why i love when artists expand a lil bit on their process and why things turn out the way they do. i understand Happiness way more now. this type of song is usually near the end of their records tho, interesting they put it right in the front and got it out the way.
I read the descriptions as I went through the album for my first listen and it made me appreciate/understand each song a lot more

yup that's what i'm doing now. really appreciate them shoutout apple music
what’s your favorite intro by them? mine is The 1975
Thinking objectively as a songwriter, ‘All I Need to Hear’ is maybe one of my best songs. I was in a big Paul Simon phase, and I was kind of trying to do something similar to what he did on ‘Still Crazy After All These Years.’ He can be as verbose as me, but that song was really, really tight. Almost lullaby-esque. I wanted to write something that was earnest and sincere and didn’t require me, specifically, to deliver it. I almost hope it will be covered by someone else, and that will become the definitive version.
a very elongated way of saying he wrote a very simple but objectively well-written song. lol. i think it's a bit boring tho but i get what he means
the man added lines about his mother's reaction to hearing the lyrics of the SAME song. he's so meta

Wtf
The 1975 is way better
i must just be an evil nigga cause i think Human Too and that one 070 Shake song where she's tryna heal the world are two of the lamest songs i've heard this year.
as soon as those drums come crashing in on About You you know this s*** about to be FIRE
Inside Your Mind, About You, if Matty does a whole project in that voice and mood it's a classic
yup that's what i'm doing now. really appreciate them shoutout apple music

The album was finished with. ‘About You’ was Track 11 and there was a Track 10 called ‘This Feeling.’ But because of what the song was about, and also sonic reasons, I was like, ‘That song can’t be on the album.’ But we had to deliver it in four days. So, I said if I could get to New York tomorrow, and Jack Antonoff was around, with a drum kit and a bass, I had a half-finished acoustic song that would be better for the record. It needed to finish, and at that moment, it didn’t—there was no emotional resolve. So, I went out there, a bit heartbroken post-breakup, and this was written, recorded, and mixed in 30 hours, which is the perfect example of what making this album was like. There’s always been this ‘will they/won’t they?’ question with The 1975. Are they going to split up? Will Matty go mental? That sort of thing. Totally created by me. But I’ve stopped doing that, and I think of it more as installments of your favorite thing. Or like seasons from a TV show. ‘When We Are Together’ is the end of this season.
another interesting tidbit.

yeah but if you happen to have the actual itunes/apple music applications on your phone or laptop you don't need a subscription or anything. they're just listed in the descriptions when you click on the album

tyty
after two listens i'm still not sure how i feel about this. which i'm pretty sure means i don't like it much. the music is fine but some of the songs are just not very affecting, or are retreads of stuff i think they've done a lil better in the past. matty's writing can be so clunky sometimes, even if it's purposeful. it isn't bad but the last record was more interesting (despite its length) and they did something special on ABIIOR that i don't think was even trying to be reached here.
idk why i'm lowkey disappointed because i really only love one album from the band? but i am
Wtf
The 1975 is way better
u trippin
i wouldn’t even put that one above The 1975
Their best album by a lot
I wouldn’t put any songs here in my top 3-5 by the band but their albums are usually excruciatingly long and full of filler and this one is rock solid
