for real
Big Poppa and Juicy are the least lyricial tracks on RTD and they still have better bars and rap flows than any song of the Death Row projects released during the 90-94 period.
Biggie was a master lyricist and also a master hitmaker and songwriter, No Wu member comes close to Biggie in that department
watching i got a story to tell
and seeing his jazz and jamaican roots
it makes so much sense
Bruh it took 20 years for liquid swords to go platinum. Only built not even platinum yet. FOH
Do niggas not understand how godlike Puffy's family tree was?
He started with Jodeci and Mary.
Got Biggie
Thru Biggie, Kim came. CAMRON was going to be signed under Biggie which gives him dipset.
Mase exists. Through that Big L comes. Bad boys was running s*** that's part of the reason death row was beefing primarily with them and not wu lmao
im not disrespecting anyone, Im just stating facts, Tha Chronic and Doggystyle verses were all group efforts and Snoop never said s*** with substance, he had a dope flow, catchy bars and one of the best voices of all time but Biggie did all this s*** alone, flows, bars, hooks, song structures, rhymes schemes. Biggie is the GOAT
Idk man i think it takes a Cali nigga to really relate to their way of rhyming. But i see you he’s a more talented writer than all of them

@retro_77 rewriting history for real
no Wu Tang member in the 30 years of the group existance made one hit as BIG as Juicy, Big Poppa, Hypnotize and Mo Money Mo Problems, crazy cause Biggie only had 4 years of career. C.R.E.A.M is one of the most legendary hip hop songs of all time but that joint wasnt played in the radio and parties. Biggie put NY in the map again

Dr Dre had Conference Room meetings with like 8 different writers for each Tha Chronic verse, Snoop also already admitted getting massive help with bars and songwriting during his career, s*** Jay Z ghostwrote the definitive West Coast anthem in 30 minutes
Biggie wrote everything alone while also being lyrical, you really cant compare his writing to West Coast rappers
Crazy how in after dropping arguably the best rap album ever(Illmatic) and Big taking over NY a year later with huge songs, including imo the best rap song ever(Juicy) the West was still running s*** on the charts, radio nationwide. Dre was incredible.
Snoop Dogg is probably the most famous rapper of all time. Only people contending with him is 50, Kanye, Pac
Yeah its Snoop, Em, Pac and maybe 50.
great thread
i do think we should come together as a collective more often
i know verzuz has been the thing lately
what other events do we have right now?
that feel like they are a part of the culture?
Hadn't heard much about Nas's feelings toward Big that night. Crazy that Ready To Die won all those awards just a year after Illmatic. Big just took over East Coast rap right after Nas had dropped arguably the best rap album ever. Thats f***ing impressive.
has quik performing his diss track to mc eiht while he sat in the audience been mentioned itt yet? that was crazy

@ 2:00 quik jumps out, calls eiht his fiancée
he stands on the side of the stage performing it to eiht making eye contact while eiht stood only a couple rows away from the stage.
also during that deathrow performance they had a pac cardboard cutout in a cell. letting people know pac was down with them.

dope stuff
Award shows these days are trash. But back in 95? S*** was iconic. Its the night that changed rap as we know it. This show was right at the peak of "East vs West" and took place at the iconic Madison Square Garden. Source awards were the only award show that celebrated hip hop at the time. BET awards were still 6 years away. This show has been viewed as either the end of the golden era, the day "real" hip hop died, or the beginning of a new, more open minded generation. The big moments that happened during this show included:
Suge throwing shots at Puff/Bad Boy with his now legendary speech:
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv2OMXngkEsSnoop got heated when Dr. Dre and him got booed after winning an award and going up to the stage. He took the mic and had some words for the East Coast crowd.
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNfx325Nw78Another historic moment was when a certain Southern rap group won "Best New Artist" and got booed, simply for being from the South...some dude named Andre took the mic and gave the crowd a piece of his mind...
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5MDFOfny8IOutkast said everything changed after that^^. A not so talked about sub-plot of this show was that Biggie won all of the major awards over Nas. Nas was heartbroken Illmatic didnt win anything and Ready To Die basically swept the awards. Questlove, sitting with Wu Tang, Mobb Deep, Busta and more; a few seats behind Nas..said:
"Nas’ body language that day told the whole story of where we were about to go. The more he got ignored for Illmatic, I literally saw his body melt in his seat. Almost like he was ashamed. He just looked so defeated. I was like, ‘Yo, he’s not gonna be the same after this s***.’ None of us were the same after that day. I feel like the true underground lost its oxygen that night."
If you google the 95 Source Awards, you'll get all types of articles. From glorifying the night to saying it was the night that killed hip hop. One thing is consistent: they all say it was the night that changed rap forever.

Those names What an era
so wild that Pac was still locked up at this time
ahem
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnUKCbLVzUg!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmVjEHsqXSAThis came out in 1992 and Biggie himself said that Puff stopped him from making Machine Gun Funk which is classic boom bap from being the lead single in favor of Juicy and Big Poppa.
Puffy made the singles of RTD and especially LAD similar to the type of singles coming out of the West and Death Row to help Bad Boy grow in popularity nationwide.
Wu and Nas stuck with the classic East Coast sound so their movements felt more organic.
Hell, there's even rumors that Pac scrapped his album in 94 because Biggie stole his concept for RTD.
Is it confirmed that Puff found these samples from these songs? Or is it just a coincidence?
On the topic of the West Coast influencing Biggie, King T was a major inspiration for his flow
I wanna hear the first version of me against the world that 2pac scrapped because of biggie
