Guess a concerted effort to teach people about health, nutrition and regular exercise is out of the question? Did they even consider making more public green space to entice people to get outside more? Mitigating food deserts? Healthier food options for kids in school? It's cool if kids are hooked to staying indoors on their iPads as long as they take these pills?
I know the answers but s*** is so infuriating

Unfortunately it’s tough for me to go through the second link (the full guidelines) on my phone. But the first link gives a summary, which again emphasizes that intensive behavioral and lifestyle modifications are first line therapy, and that medications / surgeries are reserved to patients refractory to first line therapy.
I don’t think it’s at all predatory, as the group making the guidelines have no financial incentives to suggest medications, nor do the doctors who prescribe them.
If pure behavior modification always worked, we wouldn’t be seeing such a stark rise in obesity levels in adolescents as we are seeing now. The medications being recommended have robust research behind them, and obesity is by no means a benign disease. And the longer we wait to tackle it, the worse outcomes for patients
mfs made actual healthy & nutritious food a luxury now too 😂😂😂

Curious how you think pediatricians can make these changes?

I don't mean to put the blame solely on the APA. I'm more so talking about the lack of political will to make these changes

Very valid, but if the political will to change society is not there, how do we help kids from obesity at this present moment without the government making meaningful change?

I'm gonna be honest, I don't have the answers. But I hate to see society go down the band-aid solution of prescribing more pills without instilling lasting behavioral changes
They managed to teach it to us as kids (at least where I am), what changed?
Instead of just spending less money on food and eating our habits they want families to do the option get expensive af medication asap
U dont get fat from expensive food lol. Most fat people eating mcdonalds and wendys on the reg
overtly obvious ploy to give more money to big pharma at a detriment to the safety of the public

It sucks going down the band-aid route, but from a healthcare point of view, we can’t just sit back and wait for society to make changes while all of these obese children develop devastating co-morbidities
How difficult would it be for the USDA to run some type of campaign for proper portion sizes and maybe adjust the food pyramid a bit?

Fast food habits are more expensive than at home cooking
put a shirt on nigga

Pure behavior modification is not even measurable because doctors like you have to solely take the parents words on how much of an honest effort towards lifestyle changes they’ve given. Let’s face it, if the kid is obese it’s very likely the parents have their own set of unchecked behavioral issues or habits and are in no position to give truthful judgement or help guide the kid.

Yeah I know, so then what are we expected to do? You can’t just sit there and watch an obese child develop diabetes, liver disease, coronary artery disease, etc. because their parents are unable to help them get healthy
There are resources to help them, but at the end of the day it lies on them and their parents

healthy food is gatekept to an extent
medicating obesity isn't gonna fix s*** long term, but unfortunately the solution would require large scale systemic change that is pretty unrealistic at the current moment
Fast food habits are more expensive than at home cooking
fast food is def cheaper than fresh fruit and veggies and lean proteins. not to mention the time it takes to procure and prepare the food for certain families.
Fast food habits are more expensive than at home cooking
You are greatly underestimating the cost of convenience, especially in the US.

No, because that would make sense
Thousands of damn years people have been able to monitor their own eating habits
Now this country wants to tell society no parents can’t portion control and monitor the eating behavior of their own kids, buy more pills instead!!
Once you get past a certain threshold, obestiy does biologically and mentally change your gut and mental health.
It's similar to d*** abuse. You have to add exercise, diet, pills, and other treatments to remove that extra weight in good amount of time.
Plus all the food around us isn't good.
