i had Sloop John B in my head in repeat these last few days
sloop john b was al jardineâs idea, he has the bigger knowledge of folk music heâs really into that so he knew that song and proposed to brian to âbeach boysâ it up
i used to think it was out of place on pet sounds, i would rather take an original song over it, why not include the single the little girl i once knew? itâs upbeat too
but it grew on me, itâs a banger and the theme works with the album after all, lonelyness, trying to find a place, makes lot of sense for it to be there
i love the video, the trick of brian shaking hands to the other band members and then switching for carl making u think itâs still brian for him to have shake hands with brian really fooled me lol

few years later in 69 al jardine brought the same idea with the song cottonfield by the great ledbelly, brian produces and arranged it to make it more pop, it sounds great! obviously it didnât take off as big as sloop john b but itâs still really nice, being coming back to me lately a lot, good jam, just more bluesy

Where does The Beach Boys core catalog end? Surfs Up? Love You? All studio albums? Iâm trying to complete my beach boys collection to go with my Beatles complete set and Iâm struggling with what to leave out
Where does The Beach Boys core catalog end? Surfs Up? Love You? All studio albums? Iâm trying to complete my beach boys collection to go with my Beatles complete set and Iâm struggling with what to leave out
to end with surfâs up would be a crime
especially if you love that album cos surfâs up is only the start of their new line up so the other two albums that came after are the naturally progression and continuation off of surfâs up more âhipsterâ style
letâs say love you is definitely the last core stop, hereâs where it gets tricky tho because id say thereâs one worth last stop after that, as a final treat, bonus
so after love you you get just albums that are good to pick some deep cuts from but not a whole album experience worth, for example you got miu album with a love you âmy dianeâ which bothers me because itâs a original love you composed and session song left off but love you used good time which is a left of off sunflower from 1969? so like the whole album you listen to a rough obese brian from 1977 then jump back to a healthy falsetto brian from 1969 on one song
SO weird decision
yet love you is a personal fav but is very special and unique sounding, takes few listens (itâs the first since pet sounds and last beach boys album entirely composed and produced by brian) so id say put my diane on love you instead of good time, yeah thatâs frankensteining it but doesnât it make sense? lol
again, i digress
either way skip miu but however l.a. album imo is the real last stop; it has its fans and that includes me, ive made a post about it earlier but ill say it again; outside of one cheesy mike love original song (âsummahummaâ but itâs not even his worst so itâs fine) and most terrifying the disco remake of âhere comes the nightâ from wild honey (thatâs when bruce johnston who got fired during the whole jack rieley era -manager of the band from surfâs up who wrote and sang too and revamped the band for the more hippie audience- came back into the band with this disco remake idea, HE REALLY THOT he had one!! he had previously whole solo try to make awful country remakes of donât worry baby and a disco remake of an old sixties surf song) and maybe one al jardine song that is hehh (lady lynda), not my cup of tea at all, boring
the rest is actually very good, one or two unfinished brian songs but that are really nice (first is opener good timinâ which is smooth and second is shorteninâ bread which is a fun short crazy jam he has obsessed for years and re-recorded many times) and the rest are all dennis and carl songs! how can that go wrong? theyâre beautiful songs! and both together they take half the album, they have some of their best songs on it actually so yes id say underrated album
the 2012 comeback album is this ^ but by x50 in terms of how you jump from very bad mike love material to great brian wilson stuff
final stop is indeed love you
cheat code if youâre still hungry however do jump forward onto âl.a. albumâ and thatâs youre last âalbumâ stop worth experience, the rest would be deep cuts at best to check out really, here and there
btw they been updating on brians YouTube cool insightful clips of brian speaking about some songs his thots on it or story behind it, this one just came up 3 hours ago:

i donât know when these clips were recorded, i donât think theyâre new, pretty sure they come from something from some years ago, at least some 10y avi if not more

beautiful song that only surfaced in 2013 on the boxset âmade in californiaâ
this version if frankensteined out of two different takes: brians vocals from his own demo of it from 1974 inserted into a full band recording version of the song done in 1978, yeah that sounds like a big leap in audio recording and eras, but it works just fine! song is an amazing soulful californian gospel kinda
