i used to be mad it was on ps bc even tho it’s a banger and a hit and uplift the album sonically wise i rather have an original song on it especially for brians peak so i was like y not at least reuse little girl i once knew, it’s from that era and production still, an original brian song and still upbeat

but then someone told me how sloop john b fits the pet sounds narrative of wanting to belong somewhere, feeling lonely and it totally clicked and made sense to me since

bro like even the compromise, taken down a notch, version of whatever smile was supposed to be, is better than where like most artists will get

it took me time to get into it and it’s still underrated bc ppl have expectations when going into it, at least today since the smile myth overshadows everything in their legacy, to a point where it’s overwhelming and sometimes hurting

smiley smile is a good example of that, even back then it would be impossible to live up to the hype the original concept led up, the project was doomed

but it should be taken as it’s own standout take, there’s a reason it’s called smiley smile
