  • In a move that ought to make fans of The Beatles twist and shout, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Oscar-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes and his Neal Street Productions have set plans to make four separate theatrical films, one on each of the members of music’s most famous and enduring band.

Mendes will direct all four of the films, and this marks the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and The Beatles – Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison – have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.

Mendes conceived this grand vision. He’ll tell interconnected stories, one from each band member’s point of view.

Insanely trash. Ballad of John and Yoko as a top 5 pick gives “I overplayed the actual better stuff and just discovered Past Masters” energy respectfully. Slightly overrated now by people who feel just want to make a not obvious pick but it’s becoming more obvious

Somewhat disagree, considering Lennon and McCartney easily deserve their own and there’s kind of too much to cover in one film

Should've been just one long biopic or a miniseries

I don’t think they could fit it in one biopic, not realistic imo

Mini series would be possible but Beatles belong on the big screen. I get the cynicism against “universes” but as a Beatles fan this might be the way to go honestly

I’m all for being cynical against trends and industries

But sometimes I feel like people jump to the easy conclusion too much nowadays

I don’t like cinematic universes more than anyone else but the kneejerk “omg universe bad” rhetoric is a little lacking in nuance for me

It’s like y’all just memeing off headlines

This the same thought process that had people crying about an “AI Beatles song”. Which again I don’t like AI either but people just jumped out the window and assumed the worst off of a buzzword. Feels like the same thing happening itt

Which one do we think is going to make the least? My moneys on George

  • I’ve always wondered when we’d get a “definitive” Beatles movie or miniseries that goes from John and Paul linking up to the break up.

There’s just so much there that I’m shocked it hasn’t happened yet. I guess I chalk it up to how expensive of a production it would be, just licensing rights alone would probably turn a lot of studios off.

I can already see the viral tweets and fantano making rage bait videos about “OmG, The Beatles are A CiNeMaTIc uNiVerse nOW?!?!?!? WTF EVERYTHING HAS TO BE A UNIVERSE” like yawn. The rage against things like this has lost all its bite

This isn’t inherently a bad idea and given Apple Corps amazing track record (including executing that “AI” song yall cried doomsday about) it’ll most likely be executed amazingly so I’m telling y’all now: chill and don’t fall for the easy outrage bait just to end up coming around later

He’s a big part of the music discourse. And you can quote me when I’m right. The reason I mention him is because he was making dishonest lowest common denominator videos about “OMG AI BEATLES SONG WTF” for literal months and was even trying to grift off that outrage bait after it had been revealed that AI was only used to clean up the tape essentially

You can quote me when I’m right about this and he jumps out the window about this for views. It’s not really him I care about; it’s very obvious that he has an impact on the music discourse as a whole though

And it reflects in some of the shallow knee jerk reactions going on itt. I’m trying to keep nuance alive
