the "messy" thing has always been a crutch for justifying Kanye throwing his hands in the air and just not caring anymore. you can feel how he knew it was somewhat the end for him based on the fact that he basically called everyone he knew to help him write/produce the project so he could say "look! this is how influential I am! bringing in all these different walks of life! living breathing experience!" he's never talked about his musical intention with this album in any way if thats not indicative enough
to follow yeezus up with a record that leaned so heavily into kardashianism/influencer culture and hollow shock value, along with the knowledge that he barely did anything on this except for mere curation was the first big stain on Kanye's legacy for me personally...I knew it was the end when he did 2016 SNL.
not to mention the weird transition from using his white voice from 2010-2015 and then very weirdly doing the slurred voice alter-ego shtick, as if he was insecure about being an out of touch kardashian? the whole thing reeked of insecurity desperation and sliminess lmfao
saint Pablo tour msg was a lot of fun though
am i reaching or did the cover start something
the cover was always prevalent in culture because iirc it was designed by the same dude who did the riot graphics for raf back in the day
but yes he popularized it bigtime same with the tombstone merch
i love this album got some of his best rapping (nmpila and saint pablo) some of his best emotional songs (ulb, the three song stretch from real friends->wolves) some of his best storytelling and sample chops (30 hours my fav sample chop he’s done idc), love the bangers on this like famous fsmh pt1 waves feedback fade and highlights. sure it’s not perfect but i love it and i hold it dearly to me when i was miserable as hell this album was there. crazy replay value and had a good balance of emotional songs and slaps. tbh it is messy but the mess kinda feels intentional represents kanye at that time and i like how the album is very chaotic and gradually becomes more sad and depressed ending with wolves. with what we learnt about kanye later having bipolar kinda shows what he was feeling at the time being depressed stressed but also manic
