I see why it's a robbery but at the same time it's been favourable too. Alot of people in the old days would just download the music illegally without ever thinking of buying physicals so atleast now they supporting the artist in some way with streaming. Also means less likely an artist gets shelved since it's easy to distribute the music cheaply out now

Artists gotta rely on merch and tour

You have to understand that it didn't replace CDs... It replaced the literal robbery of piracy that was getting bigger and bigger while CDs were on their death march regardless.

Now Im not saying the streaming s*** is perfect and can't be changed to make it more artist friendly, but that was the situation it was born in.

Still better than the streaming service which we have to buy 5+ because the movies are all scattered around

I have a startup where we sell you bundles of different streaming packages for a competitive price.

Haven’t thought of a name for it tho

    no going backs

  • Sep 6, 2023

I understand artists should be paid more but why would they deserve the majority when the label is the one doing the leg work

What would happen if artists like Drake, Kendrick, Ye, Travis, Beyoncé, Taylor swift, Nicki, etc all came together and pulled their s*** from streaming at once?

Artists are doing better now than ever before.

It's more possible for artists to make a living doing what they love now than ever before, and the proof is LOOK HOW MANY THERE ARE.

In the past you would have to be one of the lucky few selected by a label. Now you can start your very own label on spotify.com tiktok.com instagram.com and promote your music to millions without ever owning a suit. The streaming revenue regular ass people make is amazing given that 30 years ago they would have sold 4 CDs to their friends and played 2 shows in their hometown before giving up. There's more stylistic diversity, niches have been invented for every subculture of a subculture of a subculture. Life is good. Now we just have to deal with that damn AI.

When I was a kid every CD we owned was just Napster files burned on a disc with the title written in sharpie.

Streaming is so much better. Think about how many artists you've discovered through the internet, then went to a show and bought their merch. The corporations are very much NOT in control anymore.

    DVDs as well

As soon as it was available to NOT pay for something, people aren't going to do it. All we can do is make solutions.

the ease is access is obviously a plus and the amount of stuff I have discovered thanks to the low barrier to entry is invaluable

but there is something we lost in process. That feeling of being obsessed with one album and examining the physical so deeply, that loss of physicality is so sad to me.

Artists are the reason why life is worth living. They write stories, they create beautiful music, they design our buildings and roads we walk on, the clothes we wear, the shows and movies we watch, the entertainment that keeps us laughing and engaged while we spend time with loved ones on our days off.

Artists need more respect. People get greedy and accustomed because it’s seen as “normal” but imagine what this world would be without any humans attempting to think creatively. Everything would look and be the same and life would be insanely mundane.

They’re not in control, but the artists haven't realized they have the power now.

There needs to be an entertainment industry strike much like the writers strike rn.

    Things need to drastically change.

As long as the corporations control the algorithms and maintain the illusion of power, we will continue to have watered down GARBAGE in every avenue of art (namely music and film/TV industry)
