idk, it checks off a bunch of boxes as to what this SHOULD sound like, but it really it feels like Cudi pulled all of his trite hums and lonelyisms out of a hat for each song. His music is not a blanket in the way it was for me when I was 16, its merely a recipe drawn out over a bunch of trap and alternative beats.

Production is great, Cudi's presence is upfront, but from a progression perspective he sounds hallow, and doesn't go where I know he can. What makes Cudi great to me is that the idea of him being lonely worked best as an element of his overall style instead of THE theme of each song, even if it's what made him. You just needed a line or two to really stick out, "a little bit off I am I am I am, "day and night I toss and turn". It didn't slow down the momentum of songs that were ultimately versatile and upbeat. This just over-saturates everything that he sees his fanbase latch onto and as a result he loses touch of the entire painting at large.

Some songs are nice and sentimental though, but I guess im getting older

the lonely being a style instead of a theme is a great point but it only really applies to aknc and motm1

My biggest issue with this is it feels like he set out to make a record that sounds like what PEOPLE like rather than what HE likes

It very much ticks all the boxes of what is popular and 'in' at the moment

    • Spacey Travis-esque production
    • Psychedelic trap-beats with Mike Dean outros
    • Contemporary 'trap' features (Pop Smoke, Skepta, Trippie)

Whereas MOTM1 & 2 feel like records in which he was just making music
that reflected HIM best, whatever sound that took shape in didn't matter -
This record feels very conscious of what's popular at the moment, and then proceeds to shape itself around that

I knew this would happen when I saw that bit written for the album talking about “cudi use to be sad then he got happy again but he’s getting sad for the last time!” Something like that

i gotta say i don't really hear what you're saying. if this was just a pandering album he could've forced a bunch of sad songs on there that don't reflect his current mindset but instead he opted for mostly trap bangers and some reflective cuts about his struggles to get where he is now. i feared this album might betray the raw honesty that has defined his discography up to this point (because his fans clearly wanted more depressing tunes), but it's pretty clear he wasn't forcing anything and just wanted to make the music he loves, which i respect and view as progression on his part.

Cudi in his interview yesterday: “I wasn’t even trying to make motm3 i just started recording songs and my heart told me this is man on the moon 3.”

The people who don’t like the first 8: “He just wants to be popular”
