    RT.

“It gotta grow on me” is just copium in nerd speak.

nah its just how you get into different styles of music and expand your taste if you judge everything based off first listen your taste will just probably remain the same as its always been

thats kind of a different topic tho, i think even having a discussion of first impressions is fine...and it also just gives other people a chance to talk about those artists discography. like i dont remember the last thread i saw people talking about all of Commons albums but that thread gives a place for it

I don’t think there’s an issue on a music forum at all, for the record.

But I think there is a point to be made about how much you can fully appreciate a body of work in a single day. And my thought isn’t just about these threads in particular. It’s about our attention spans, the times we’re living in, the streaming era, where things just come and go in a week or two. Can you really explore a discography in a week, or are you just making a cursory glance over it?

Like back in the day, you’d have to go and put effort into finding a place that had a particular album for sale. Then you’d go out of your way to purchase a physical piece of work with your hard earned money. And you’d play the s*** out of it, and it wouldn’t be out of rotation in just two weeks time because you’d have more of a connection to it. But now luckily we don’t have to do any of that, because for about half of what it cost for that cd, you have access to all of that artists albums ever. You no longer have to make the commitment of a purchase. But are you still making that same connection with that body of work?

It’s like how you retain more information writing your notes than typing them.

Again I’m not trying to downplay anyones threads, and I’ve seen some thoughtful posts in them. I just question how deep you can really get into an album in a single day.

100% facts here. in the age of streaming and infinitely available music we have to make sure we don't just end up mindlessly skimming stuff

but just to be clear real quick, are you also not in favor of the first impression threads that happen every week albums drop? like would you think it would make more sense to have the discussion thread a week or two out from release?

i think even that wouldn't necessarily work because like someone else pointed out, we're inundated with tons of music on a weekly basis so typically we're not even "digesting" that one project alone unless we really really love it.

    actual serious response pls brother

First off I just want to say then I hope my tone didn’t come off hostile in anyway. I respect your point and can understand where you’re coming from. As someone who loves music the same.

I think everybody digests music differently though. I don’t think there’s one linear way of doing so. I know for myself, the Common music I listened to has definitely stayed with me.

There’s this one song off one of his newer albums called “Show Me That You Love” about his estranged daughter telling him “it’s not about what you did, but what you didn’t do”. And that s*** had a profound impact on me. To the point where the song is still playing in my head 2 days later.

Na see that’s totally fine and productive imo for a couple reasons.

Since those threads are for brand new albums, it makes sense that everyone is just posting their thoughts as they are able to listen. it’s an active topic of discussion regardless of the thread being made about it. what i have a problem with in the threads i’m calling out is how some of the users are framing the whole thread as something to “explore” or do “deep dives” on less popular discographies and to foster music discussion, when in reality they’re just listening to an album once, writing 3 sentences about what they remember, giving it a very arbitrary score and then moving on to the next one. this way of listening enforces the idea that one can make up their mind on a numerical score for an album off of one listen/one day of listening, and discourages repeat listens of albums that gave weak first impressions but might’ve grown to be a personal favorite.

just my two cents obviously, not sure why some users are so mad at me for this thread lol

As the person who started this trend let me ask you something.

What have you actually contributed to make KTT2 a better site? Make 50 threads about Lil B?

Yeah that's great bro. You do you.

As for the people who wanna broaden their musical horizons, let them. Its making for good music discussion and debate, not just the same 100 rehashed threads about Drake or Yeat.

Instead of yelling to the clouds, why don’t you contribute something that could inspire other users?

Yeah you’re right about people listening to music differently, and going back to my notes a***ogy, some people can ace the test without even having to take good notes.

My thoughts are really more a commentary about how we as a whole consume music nowadays rather than any individual one of these threads. It’s just the threads did bring me to these thoughts I’ve had about our consumption now.

You mad because in the last two weeks, this trend that was started had a stronger and more positive impact in anything you have or will ever do on here. Like seriously imagine going on the Internet and making a thread complaining about people Discovering music that might bring them joy and happiness. You’re a sad bitter angry little boy. Just put me on block again because I don’t wanna waste my time replying to you.

You are the type of user that makes people not take KTT2 seriously.
