(I’m upset OP slandered my 2 favorite artists 2 weeks in a row, he’s adding substance to his threads I don’t actually have a problem with him making them)

sLums members are all directly impacted by Earl to begin with. Him seeing other young niggas what he was on to start just inspired him to essentially make the best project in that vein.

Also shout out to Alchemist, RZA, Blu who also are the father's. Roc Marci honorable mention

i forgot about that jesus mixtape by blu tbh. that's a good example of the sound or s***ty recording

edit: charles Hamilton been ran through all of those sounds tho but
if a tree falls in the forest the sonic ain't gonna be heard

I will actually agree that his delivery isn’t very engaging at all, which is what always turns me off his music. Can’t front on the pen though

see. I honestly think earl is not leading that movement. because SRS is a product of him hanging around those sLUm niggas. and at the same time most of the new production they're creating is "grandfathered" in by Madlib. Whatever they've released so far just isn't different enough for me to say "WOW that's something new."

the only song that completely hit me like that is nowhere2go.
and even then you can look at standing on the corner and knxwledge for something similar.

he did father lucki tho. but in the weirdest of ways because lucki is on some completely other s***.

J.Cole is doing something close to putting new people on with J.I.D. and Earthgang and the results of that have yet to be seen.

I guess it’s a chicken egg thing, because acting like slums wasn’t hugely influenced by earl’s sound is nuts. Solace and winds in my sails, iirc, preceded meeting the dudes from slums.
And madlib/doom/dilla are granddaddys of the sound for sure, but weren’t yet influenced by the quieter, choppier, weird pocket finding sounds from mumble rap.

A label isn’t a genre, although they do all kind of have the same base-level lyrical rap thing going on.

How the f*** do you perceive a black man trying to cope with the recent loss of his father through music as pretentious?

Just say you don’t like it and go about your day
