don't know too much about neil young, but bob dylan is mainly praised for his outstanding songwriting ability + his influence versus his longevity

and i define longevity as someone putting out music that is "considered good" versus continued commercial success, it's a very pick and choosy factor as far as im concerned and just doesn't make sense

prince is probably my all time favorite musician ever + i'd argue him as the greatest musician to ever live, but the latter half of his work after roughly Sign O' The Times, the quality drops off a cliff, and he doesn't reach those peaks in the earlier parts of his discography at all for the rest of his work

just because of this, this is somehow supposed to disqualify him from all time rankings? it's absolutely moronic, and something i primarily only see among hip hop fans in all honesty, this extends to Eminem too, he is probably one of the most technically gifted rappers to ever grace a mic, and he has at least 3 great albums, the rest of his discog isn't up to par, so this disqualifies him in spite of his outstanding rapping ability, influence etc?

i just personally can't reasonably do it in all honesty, if it works for you, more power to you

We know Drake can write but the fact that he used writers at one point to cut corners is a bad look. Knocks him down a few spots.

Dylan is know for a s***load of things but one of them is crafting classic albums and a big part of his esteem within the rock and roll world is the fact that he's come out with another handful of them 40 years into his career. This is only two year old and just as powerful as anything he's ever created.

i obviously think classic albums play a big part in an all time list too as well, but my overarching point is that when someone's legacy is already set there shouldn't be any such thing as it somehow being tarnished if they fall off the horse and aren't able to capture their artistic peaks ever again/top their strongest albums

this literally only benefits artists' who have their career cut short due to death and other different factors, who knows what Biggie's discography would've looked like if he had stayed alive? he could've been releasing nothing but straight up garbage after RTD

all time rankings are a completely different beast compared to who's just a better rapper in general (albeit i'd argue rapping is a big part of just artistry in general, and it shouldn't be something that's separated but meh)
