The easiest way to tell is whether or not an artist is getting radio play in big feature spots.

Almost NEVER happens to unsigned acts.

both attribute it to Hip hop forums/communities in the early 2010s

literally the fact that its clearly not a term that existed prior to 2010 and that it originated form hip-hop forums should be enough for you to accept that it either came from him or came from places directly associated with here like TheColi and got popular from here

My conclusion is that it was not a popular term but was def used pre 2013. KTT popularized, NOT INVENTED.

They fake like they don't know what the spirit of the phrase means.

Like "I'm not signed to a major" but nigga, you're signed to like, ICM or some other big agency lol

I think in general though, artist who claim they are independent are f***ing around with the word, because TO ME, you can't be independent signed to a major management company, etc.

Also pretty sure RMR was a plant - he apparently signed after going viral but it seems too convenient feel like label signed him and made him go viral

RMR was 100% a plant. There were lots of articles that were published at the same time describing Rascal as a "viral sensation" even though the video barely has 3.5m views as of right now and even less listens on Spotify
