I mean not in a way thats provable though

like maybe a ton of artists pretend to be unsigned but we will never know that they're pretending

    Agree 100% here.

The easiest way to tell is whether or not an artist is getting radio play in big feature spots.

Almost NEVER happens to unsigned acts.

    complex themselves say
"It’s difficult to pinpoint the first use of the phrase, but it seems to have emerged through message board culture at the start of the 2010s. A thread on the influential forum KanyeToThe from 2012 posits that everyone from Waka Flocka Flame to Lil Wayne to 50 Cent was an industry plant, albeit without any evidence."

No thats a random P&P article I saw the same thing. The s*** has typos and is from this year. Of course somebody who probably browses KTT thinks that we made the term.

    thats shady imo

I mean theres like 4 different articles all placing origin of the word in hip hop message boards in 2012

ktt has threads using it in 2012
the site was at least one of the first forums if not the first forum

I know once @S said we have about 280,000 here so we're actually kinda large. I think we only have about 2000 consistent users tho, from what I can tell

both attribute it to Hip hop forums/communities in the early 2010s

literally the fact that its clearly not a term that existed prior to 2010 and that it originated form hip-hop forums should be enough for you to accept that it either came from him or came from places directly associated with here like TheColi and got popular from here

The first source is a college magazine
The second is a tabloid writing about Ak, Raury and Clairo (all new fixtures)
I searched google trends and these were the results

My conclusion is that it was not a popular term but was def used pre 2013. KTT popularized, NOT INVENTED.

but is that because of surrounding words? is there a way to filter by that EXACT term?

That's another way people get around the industry plant discourse.

They fake like they don't know what the spirit of the phrase means.

Like "I'm not signed to a major" but nigga, you're signed to like, ICM or some other big agency lol

I think in general though, artist who claim they are independent are f***ing around with the word, because TO ME, you can't be independent signed to a major management company, etc.

yea independence is another world that needs better defining here

by some standard drake is independent now
but a major label is still distributing his s***

    theres different levels to it

    Yea agree

Not in a pure sense but they intersect

Also pretty sure RMR was a plant - he apparently signed after going viral but it seems too convenient feel like label signed him and made him go viral

RMR was 100% a plant. There were lots of articles that were published at the same time describing Rascal as a "viral sensation" even though the video barely has 3.5m views as of right now and even less listens on Spotify
