there's a shot in Lost Highway where Bill Pullman looks in a mirror, and you don't realize at first it's a mirror, and David wanted it really dark... and when I saw the dailies I knew immediately it was underexposed. It was really milky. And it was probably the worst nightmare - he said "that's beautiful! I want the whole film to look like that!"
the last scene of the Mulholland Drive pilot was Betty dying Rita's hair when she comes into the bedroom and they end up sleeping together that was shot a year and a half later

Yup but... whats this have to do with TP
Also i'm so happy the series didn't get greenlit and MD turned into a film because it's the greatest of the 00s

thread's been known as a space for all Lynch talk :) also I agree MD is arguably the best film of the 00s, it still boggles my mind how that would've even worked as a series it seems so perfect. I'd still love to read an outline for how it was supposed to progress as a series after the pilot

I still remember the first time i watched MD and i fell asleep in the first 20 mins or so, second time i loved it a lot, 3rd time it became an all time favorite for me

yeah I actually was like right after my first watch and felt sort of underwhelmed, and like it just didn't make much sense. But I couldn't decide whether it was the film that was stupid or me and whether I liked the washed out aesthetic and ended up just watching it again right the next day (and I only very rarely rewatch films I love, barely ever ones I didn't like) and suddenly that washed out look was so gorgeously dreamy to me and I noticed how complicated the narrative is and started to really obsess over it, spending the next weeks poring over that brilliant analysis and it basically became the greatest film of all time to me
There's many films where ppl say you have to watch it twice but MD is the rare one where your second watch can really change everything

Taking the words out of my mouth, all this is accurate
interested in seeing how you would rank his filmography

10/10
Twin Peaks + FWWM + Return
Mulholland Dr.
Inland Empire
Lost Highway
Blue Velvet
Eraserhead
9/10
Wild at Heart
8/10
The Elephant Man
7/10
Dune (Spice Diver Fan Edit)
The Straight Story
The 10s switch around basically with every other rewatch of one of those lol, but TP has slowly established itself for me as his magnum opus and MD is his overall most "perfect" work

Nice to see the love for Lost Highway & Inland Empire, our rankings are very much alike
are my all time favs
these 4 are all f***ing amazing and they will probably switch around or get newfound appreciation upon rewatching some more
Haven't seen the Straight Story or Elephant Man yet
Finished S1 of TP recently and have yet to see S2, FWWM & The Return so can't rank those either yet, but i love TP so far

I think I've seen it 4 times and still can't muster any enthusiasm for it

funny cos i just made a comment today on your Dune review about that
Dune, Wild At Heart and The Return are my fave for some reason
thats a weird ass combination of Lynch work to be your fav

I know not even trya be edgy those are just the ones that hit hardest

lynch has divisive ass fans because those 3 works are probably my least favorite from him lmao

Dune is just wack to me overall, besides the awesome costume designs and stuff. With what we have gotten they were better off just financing the Jodorowsky version where he would have gone fully wacky. Cause what Lynch made didn't even represent the Dune world right either.
I do love Wild At Heart, i adore Nic Cage in that role, totally fits him. Lot of fun to watch, plenty of weirdness but that same weirdness can be found in all his other films that actually deliver more for me story wise and thematically compared to just another ''crazy couple movie number X''

For sure, but that's a given with the type of films he makes. They're all distinctively him but all have their own flair. I personally enjoy Mulholland Drive & Lost Highway the most, but i have yet to finish Twin Peaks S2 + S3 and FWWM

Just finished reading Dune for the first time 2 days ago lol I have no problem with his portrayal tbh
And yeah WAH just the right type of bonkers for me. Astounding shroom watch.

Yeah the energy that film carries is crazy and def one i could rewatch multiple times as well if we talking about pure enjoyment but his other films actually give me more to chew on when revisiting them and that's how i like my Lynch personally

i have no doubt theres way more to chew on with MD but on a visceral level it just doesnt hit hard enough for me to care

I understand. Happens sometimes. I personally was bored to death watching Tarkovskys Stalker and never seen another film by him after that so far. Just didn't care about everything that's supposed to make it good because i didn't enjoy watching it
