wow.
And this is what I'm talking about. Like they have an actual good line up of performers and not just "the superstars" and they didn't even bother to advertise this s***.
Like I actually wanna see this s***.
Yeeaah ion mean to be that kinda nigga, but the BET Hip-Hop Awards has often shined some light on the more obscure and/or upcoming rap acts in their cyphers lol this is not some kinda new thing.
Oh word. I aint know Pregnant P**** hit the charts lol.
I aint know Gravediggaz was on Kids Bop CDs.
I aint know Bizarre was performing at the Grammies.
I ain't know horrorcore rappers as an entire genre were getting awards and s*** :word:
dmx one of the biggest rappers ever
camron one of the most influential rappers of the 2000s
Biggie literally undisputed top 5 discussion
next?
I get why Tyler is upset, but he gotta realize although the people he wants to listen to his music dont listen to his music, they respect him regardless
Hell we all respect Tyler, even if we aint big fans of the music, we get it
he was kinda on point til the car thing thats such a dumb non-comparison lol
guy always has to shoehorn a reference to how rich he is
everything else is unassailable fax
Ja Rule was literally a hit in the female demographic and had rape lyrics
There's so many examples like this isn't about race know your black history
Lmao you know? You from Atlanta? You do understand Atlanta is home to so many alt-black people (Tyler audience), gay people (Tyler audience) and niggas who just like Tyler? You the one who said “what black city is Tyler hot in”, and I answered
The nigga just wants to make more rap music. I dont think you can assume that he wants more rap fans unless he says “I want more rap fans”. He’s been rapping his whole career and hasn’t always been experimental.
You are making assumptions. Give me some sources or your s*** is anecdotal as well. Also we not talking about the average fan of Tyler the Creator so don’t change your argument. Your claim was that his music isnt popular in black spaces. Prove that then.
I don't believe that a significant amount of gay and/or black people in ATL care for tyler tbh but I have no way of knowing for sure, just the content creators I follow from ATL never mentionned him nor reference him in any way shape or form (just my personal observation)
he'll be on tour soon, we'll see what his audience looks like then
ps: I don't see ATL on the tour
Yeah and tyler isn't a hot act in atlanta. An example of a hot act is baby youngboy durk gunna and the other artists where we know where their core audience comes from.
I'm not from atlanta but I know what anecdotal evidence is lmao. Just cause he's hot in your circle don't make him a hot act in black america the way you suggest.
My s*** isn't anecdotal because I'm not using my own personal experience. I'm literally talking about what tyler has said
Lil Baby, Gunna and those other niggas literally run Atlanta and most of the hood, those are superstars in black spaces. That doesnt mean their cant be other popular acts. You wouldnt say TI isnt popular in Atlanta because he isnt NBAYB level.
You havent said s*** besides “Tyler changed his sound to rap more” Which is barely true because he’s always been rapping. He just not rapping about the edge lord s*** he did before. Im so done with you lmao you acting ed
tyler explaing his fanbase is considered niche whilst dropping some classism in it
lmao he really can't help himself fr
They wasn't about to recognize a dude rapping about raping pregnant women and burning down schools over Neptunes-lite beats at the Grammys or BET Awards b ion know what to tell you. It's almost like once he started taking his music and public perception more seriously, other platforms would start taking him seriously as well...
Them acknowledging his growth artistically since Flower Boy isn't pandering. It's them acknowledging that he...has very clearly grown artistically and is rightfully getting awarded for it.
Tyler has frequently explained why he cares so much about BET awarding him and inviting him to perform at their shows. He grew up with the s***, and even though they weren't f***ing with him (for very obvious reasons) early in his career it's still a big deal to get that recognition.
BET as a media property has been ass over the last ten years or so. However something they have always managed to get right is giving dope ass tributes and celebrating Black icons.at their award shows. They never care about the artistry? Not when they've given special awards to people like Quincy Jones, Queen Latifah, Prince, TLC, Usher, Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, and a slew of other artists?
Bro, is it really a big deal to get that recognition on BET? Times is changing.
Ofc, they wasn't going to give his early music any recognition because of many obvious reasons.
I still think they're not caring about his artistry, despite the amount of tributes in the past. I feel like they're doing this because he's popular right now, not that he's making great ass music.
But nevertheless, if Tyler still cares about it, I'm not going to go any further.
Yeeaah ion mean to be that kinda nigga, but the BET Hip-Hop Awards has often shined some light on the more obscure and/or upcoming rap acts in their cyphers lol this is not some kinda new thing.
He was talking about the live acts. Though I aint know Smino was only in the cyphers (which to me makes me angry)
"obscure/upcoming rap acts"
My nigga Smino been putting in work since 2014. Almost a f***ing decade.
Talk about obscure, that's the s*** that gets me mad. Most of these niggas aint obscure, BET is just NOW catching up years f***ing late.
wow.
And this is what I'm talking about. Like they have an actual good line up of performers and not just "the superstars" and they didn't even bother to advertise this s***.
Like I actually wanna see this s***.
Forgot to mention Isaiah Rashad (performance) & Rico Nasty (cypher) had some time too
Rich people drive fancy cars?
crazy if true

I would say T.I. is from a different generation and was one of the hottest acts in black culture in the 2000s and at one point the face of hip-hop so comparing him to a newer act is weird, but you knew this and thought you could get this off.
Tyler's peak popularity is now so it makes sense to compare him to other acts.
Tyler isn't a star in black space. He isn't popular in black space. An example of a non hood star is drake or kendrick or cole or rocky. Tyler has never been in that world because his core fanbase was edgy white kids then went to artsy white kids and now he wants acceptance. There's literally threads about this on ktt2 when he made comments and I'm sure you were in them defending this nigga and pretending what he said was false but that's not the case. Get over it tyler irrelevant in black culture
I don't believe that a significant amount of gay and/or black people in ATL care for tyler tbh but I have no way of knowing for sure, just the content creators I follow from ATL never mentionned him nor reference him in any way shape or form (just my personal observation)

Duluth is a little out of Atlanta. Atlanta has a bunch of COVID restrictions and its expensive to book in the middle of the NBA Season.
I didnt think that Tyler was popular in Atlanta until I got more in touch with the LGBT community not just in my area but in the bougie part of the city too.
Black gay people love Tyler especially since Flower Boy. This dude I used to work with who is a Barb also loves Tyler.
I think this whole thread is exposing that niggas just don't be paying attention to BET or our other Black centric media platforms.
Like I get it, y'all are above Tyler Perry's stereotype heavy content this can lead into a whole other discussion about respectability politics and Black people's internalized desire for white acceptance/caring too much about how cacs perceive Black people/culture so naturally y'all tuned out. I can't fault you for that and BET getting bought out by Viacom also doesn't help it much either. However, I'm seeing a lot of takes about BET and the more I read into them the more clear it becomes that these takes come from just not keeping up with particular aspects of BET.

TV1 >>>>>>> BET so don't even try to paint that broad brush man lol.
"respectability politics" like Tyler Perry himself don't be reinforcing that s***

Semantics.
All I'm gonna say is look at the BET Hip-Hop Awards cypher lists over the last decade. They've been paying attention to the "cult fanbase" kinda rappers.

Stop putting words in my mouth b.

hey man idk bout the covid restrictions but is ATL the only exception for this?
tyler appealing to bougie folk and a barb isn't surprising lol

Em rapped about rape lyrics at a waaaay higher consistency than Ja, X, Cam'ron, and BIG (who didn't live long enough to get caught flack for his lyrics).
And yeah. All them niggas + Jay having lyrics about d***ging up girls is bad but in our "fucked up society" is more acceptable than saying you're just gonna rape them.
Plus, Cam'ron lyrics have definitely been the reason some places don't even book him (My alma mater upstate NY (which had Lil B the year before ironically) literally could've booked him and had a overwhelming population of the student body say yes, but the council decided against it due to his lyrics.)
Black people dont go to concerts or festivals like that. (besides essancefest and other black centric festivals) So this is such a dumb point. Of course his fanbase is majority white, that’s not the point.
Bullshit lmao rolling loud is a black festival? Lola?
Way more black people/poc there than a camp crowds and I’ve been to all of them
