Do we know what manchin and sinema voted on this? This seems like something brought up by the right first and he should be blackmailed into passing the next Democrat-favored proposition to keep his wish of “bipartisanship” 😊
Sinema isn't a Democrat
Also pretty sure it will need 60 votes to pass the Senate unless its included in a spending bill
It got really far last year but then got shut down at the very end. Rubio just revived it again recently in the wake of the time change and it looks like its heading for the same trajectory. Im hoping it actually makes it this time.
It was a unanimous vote in the Senate, that's saying something
my thoughts as well
turning a fundamental issue about broader data privacy protections and the lack thereof in the USA into petty nationalist FP hawking games isn't a good thing
i get the motivations though, silicon valley is feeling threatened on their bottom line and they need their government buddies to do something about it and they hide it behind a veil of xenophobic american nationalism and that they have "real concerns"

Exactly, which is why its insane that the House iced it out.

Meta is a US intelligence front. Of course they dont care about what it does.
If you think TikTok is “selling your data” in the same way facebook and instagram are, you haven’t been properly informed. China has no boundaries between the private sector and their government. If they want to geolocate the children of a potential target asset who works at secure facility, they can do that, without a warrant, whenever they want. They’ve already been caught improperly collecting the data of journalists who report on Chinese affairs. This isn’t just ad data. They collect EVERYTHING. TikTok’s data collection is above and beyond other social media apps, but the bigger issue is who is on the other end of that data collection. Facebook and Apple and other tech companies in the US can and do refuse data collection access to the US government without a warrant - there is no such protection from the Chinese government.

Highly suggest you read Jonathan Haidt's "Coddling of the American Mind".
His substack is great as well; https://jonathanhaidt.substack.com/p/the-teen-mental-illness-epidemic
Lots of us who are old enough to remember know that 2012 was the last year the world 'felt normal' and it's largely due to social media.
If anyone is still defending these big tech companies (not just TikTok), they need to look at these charts and the studies done by Jonathan Haidt. The cope in this thread is wild at this point. Social media needs restrictions.
Society won't get better from it
ban society

this cannot at all in anyway be solely contributed to social media. In fact, maybe there are more material forces at work here lol

every social media platform in the world is an unironic psyop
what do you think the pinpoint algorithms are for, and the various optimization ppl brought on-board, which includes psychologists and ex-Military PSYOPS division people (both ByteDance and Meta utilize these folks)
its all made to drive up profits and to broker mass chunks of data to advertiser, the human is commodified once again
the reason tiktok succeeded IMO was due to its extremely adaptive algorithm and that it was able to give people the content they wanted more instantaneously and its intuitive and simple UX
