Might be the first objective classic of the 2020s
WLR, DONDA, and UTOPIA the only classics so far from this decade
Yeah Drake & Kanye probably
Idk I just think having 10s of millions of people listening to the actual music every week for a year is more impressive than having 500k people spending $5 on a vinyl so they can put it on their dresser as decoration
when you factor in Travis paid millions of dollars for these sales it feels a bit cheap to me personally. Still impressive tho
both are still hella impressive but if I was an artist I'd definitely want people listening to my actual music, not just throwing money at a decoration I put out
Vinyl ain’t no decoration man
It’s dope that people are buying physical copies, this streaming s*** won’t be forever

Id bet the majority of people buying vinyls aren't buying them to actually listen to it though right? the trend is to use them for decoration
it's definitely dope but when artists are paying outta pocket to give their fans the pure copy it doesn't feel good to me

I think discounting things like physical media is great because of the times we live in. Everything is ridiculously expensive nowadays, and vinyl prices especially have become absurd in recent years.
More artists should run discounts on physical copies so that fans who are priced out of higher price points can have a chance to buy one if they want to.
Also, he wouldn’t be selling half as much if it were just an art print of the cover so it’s definitely more than just a decoration.

I don’t believe that streaming will be the main method of music consumption for the rest of our lives.
We went from vinyl to cassettes to CDs to MP3s to streaming. I believe there will be another invention at some point in the future but I have no idea what it will be.
Also, we don’t own any of the music we stream. If Spotify or Apple Music decided to shut down tomorrow, we all lose our entire libraries. That’s why I’m a big advocate for buying physical media
roughly 70% of these sales are $5 vinyls that are still shipping from last month, since they only count when shipped
i wonder how many he actually sold, gotta be 500k+ at this point. Wild considering he likely lost a few million $ from it
there is a negative chance he lost a few million because of it. they made a killing. lots of people that were never going to buy the vinyls for $50 bought them for $5, and there's a high likelihood they're not paying more than $5 per vinyl pressing. the album doing these numbers will make him more ms than any extra vinyls could

Yeah I was gonna say if there was any actual risk of losing millions of dollars because of these discounts, I highly doubt they label would have allowed him to do it

im also one of the people that won't be buying the vinyl for $50. sadly I missed the $5 sales so I just won't get one until I find one in urban outfitters 6 months from now

I don't know about this one. I think streaming will forever be the main method of music consumption especially because it is growing rapidly over the world now.
On the other hand I'm pretty sure physicals will have another hype in the next few years but I don't think we will have a new invention at some point

streaming/cloud dominance for all media is a mega problem. we're deadass locked into Apple Music and iCloud+ for life. im not just deleting all 60k photos I have in there. yet 60k is also too many to meaningfully sort through at age 60 the way our grandparents do with photo books. decline of physical media sucks

I think streaming will last for a very long time, but ultimately I think at some point something will come along that both benefits the consumer as much as streaming does and also benefits the artists financially as much as buying physical copies does.
I don’t know how or when it will be, but nothing in this world lasts forever, I don’t expect streaming to be the first thing to do so

are we dead gonna be subscribed to Netflix til we die??? I used to feel like a kid in a candy shop going over to people's houses that had a big DVD collection... am I showing off my Netflix 'list' now?

Yeah streaming is a great thing but it’s also super depressing and demoralizing when you really think about it

Better move all that to a physical storage. Cloud could shut off tomorrow

It’s slowly starting with the phsyicals. Taylor literally proved that you can sell millions of physicals if the promotion is done well and I think the labels saw this and they’re going to do this with every artist in the near future.
Streaming and physicals will coexist in the future
Nothing lasts forever but streaming is the easiest thing to consume things and I don’t think there will be a new invention that makes it even easier, thats why it will last for a very very very long time

A very long time I agree, but I don’t think it will be the main method of consumption for the rest of our lifetimes, at least not in the way we know it to be now

I'm sure he didn't lose money overall but he definitely lost money from doing that deal
it was $5 with free shipping. Shipping for something that size costs at least $5. So even if they somehow got vinyls pressed at $5/each in bulk they're still paying $5 out of pocket per vinyl
A very long time I agree, but I don’t think it will be the main method of consumption for the rest of our lifetimes, at least not in the way we know it to be now
What will become the main method though? streaming only became #1 because it's 100x easier and cheaper than physical music
It's impossible for physicals to become like that unless they put a lot of restrictions on streaming like you can only listen to 100 songs/month or something. But that would just kill the industry
