this concept has been done a lot but maybe it’s fresh for some people so that might be why “best pilot ever” is getting thrown around. The acting and cinematography are excellent, however

...lol the condescending remark. you not the only person who has watched or read sci-fi champ

Yeah it feels like maybe it’s a metaphor for grief, the people who their family members once were is essentially gone/dead and they’re stuck in the first phase “denial”

Carol is different because her partner actually died so she’s in the second phase, anger

It does feel a bit silly though, there’s a lot of clashing elements, like the show has this dark realism that makes it compelling but the way those 5 characters acted feels more like it’s just an allegory and realism is thrown out the window at that point

what u mean with "dark realism"

That wasn’t meant to be condescending, there’s nothing wrong with this concept being fresh to anybody, I was just giving an explanation

This take on the hivemind concept has a lot of dark realism to it, which makes it feel different from most sci-fis, like the idea that 800 million people would die from going unconscious for a minute because they’re driving, standing, flying, etc. The show takes a really crazy concept and explores how it would actually play out.

I don’t think they all died from accidents, was carols friend in an accident? Didn’t she just not come to after getting the virus

Nah she was standing when she fell unconscious and slammed her head into the ground, I think that’s why when she was supposed to come to she was basically braindead

Yeah, I actually think that has a lot to do with why people are so impressed with this pilot. When you hear the premise, it sounds like it's a recipe for campy, pulpy, sci-fi, and you'd think it'd be very difficult to make a concept like this actually feel realistic but they managed to pull it off.

You could be right, I’m just speculating but the show kinda shows us a bunch of the people who died were driving when it happened like the cops Carol sees on the highway or Laxmi’s grandfather

Meanwhile all the people who survive didn’t fall for whatever reason, like the very first woman who gets held by her lab partner before she passes out

    Not sure

I wouldn't call it "realism" at all tho. Especially when the show is mostly absurdly comic; from the president looking guy talking straight to Carol from the tv, to the donuts licking, the happy-go-lucky infected guy kissing the employee, and dozens of other expamples.

Dude I’m not saying 8 billion people being a hivemind and being able to talk to the president is realism, it’s still sci-fi, im saying the way the sci-fi concept is executed has a lot of realism. 800 million people dying is a very literal way of executing this concept because it’s thinking about how everyone on earth falling unconscious would hypothetically play out in reality. It creates a dark tone that really pulls you into the world.

However my original comment that you replied to was about how some things are at odds with the realism

But you ignoring the fact that the show is incredibly absurd and sardonic, all the immune people except from Laxmi and the little girl are basically comedic reliefs. You applying that "realism" to character portrayals which is completely unrelated. Especially when the point of the second episode is that the 5 immune people are not much different from the hive mind.

Dark comedy isn’t purely absurd, there’s serious moments and commentary on death and grief in dark comedies as well. there’s a lot of scenes that aren’t funny or absurd at all. Carol losing her partner and burying her isn’t funny.

I don’t think the 5 people like her are actually like the hive mind, they’re just coping with their situation, Laxmi claims her son is still her son even though he’s obviously not anymore. That again feels more like a dark realism approach, because she’s trapped in denial and doesn’t want to admit what she’s lost.

Mr. Diabete is the most comical character and even he has some serious takes about how technically war and murder are no longer happening, which is technically the reality in this scenario

I get the impression that most here look upon 'they/them' being ultimately malevolent, while I'm actually on the side of it being ultimately benevolent. And coming from that angle, lowkey Carol might be more the problem than 'it' is

Idk if I was over tired but I had a moral dilemma watching ep 2 at some point i wondered if it was wrong.. like if humans have had a good run by that point. I’m optimistic we will glo up but yea it kinda shocked me

but you couldn't argue that their presence here on Earth so far has done more harm to humans than good right??

so I know some people have had a critique of the survivors not being believable because they're all fine with what's going on for the most part but I actually think that makes things much more interesting. I said earlier in the thread that the hivemind reminds me a bit of AI/ChatGPT at the moment. AI was something that humans never explicitly asked for but when it came, most of us were very quick to integrate it into our daily lives. I think there is a interesting message regarding those survivors who integrated quite nicely with the hive now because the hive is helpful and completely in service to you and your needs.
