Yep and Odd Future were technically skater/alt kids themselves
They were one of the first to mesh styles like that
I was still in high school when the Yonkers video dropped and Tyler performed sandwiches on the Late Show. That s**t really made people change they whole identity over night.
The one kid that was going through his normie mallcore Taylor Gang phase (blonde patch in head, sperrys, aerospastale, camo cargo shorts and etc.) came to school that next week in cut off Jean shorts, Hawaiian shirts and tube socks talking about how he likes anime now and has a Tumblr.
It was so surreal to see, 2011 was really the year the status quo started to change.
Honestly genres like Jazz got even better after they fell out of the pop domain so I don’t mind. I just hope the hip hop culture doesn’t get any more gentrified.
Good job recognizing my point as an accurate description of what’s going to happen within the next decade
You should write a book

Yeah I’m sure it will usher in some really dope authentic hip hop, but it definitely won’t be popular or mainstream
Personally I don’t mind that, I’m just curious to see what the outcome will be
Like I said, I think this decade we will see a huge shift away from hip hop as we know it
Crazy how we have 0 candidates for the next XXL list right now
I expect this decade the freshman list will either become non existent, or we won’t have freestyles anymore, instead it will be bands performing or singing or some s*** lol
The gentrification is in full effect
School shooter vibe kids used to listen to em and marilyn manson now they f*** with soundcloud rap the same
What year did hip hop become the biggest genre? Like 2016?
It’s bigger than Pop now fr
wasn’t x like a tumblr swag kid
yeah
its crazy that these niggas really grew up to become somebodys favorite rapper

yeah I would say 2016 or whenever streaming really took off.
A lot of the alt kids got into hip hop during Tumblr wave and a lot got into it after hip hop replaced indie/alternative as the genre with the most critically acclaimed albums (MBDTF).

This
One of my friends was in emo/alt bands all throughout high school and college.
Got his audio engineering degree and is now a strictly hip hop producer and works solely with hip hop artists lol

Nigga said f*** it time to throw on a new mask
Hip hop ends when the grammy gives awards to a white girl pretending to be a bad guy over trap production.
oh wait...
sometimes i forget just how mentally old you guys are
When you come up hearing prime Wayne, Jeezy, Kanye, dipset etc from like age 7/8 you’re gonna be a more seasoned listener
Just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s good
