    Guys, forget it argueing.
    You won't change their opinion.
They live in a society that focuses more on the individual instead of solidarity, they grew up with it, praying self-responsibility is what they've been taught.

You can argue around with raising value added and progressive taxes all you want, all they can see is that at the end of the day, they will have to pay more out of their own pockets, they don't want to be responsible for others. And they can't see the benefits of aiding these people in the long run. That's the way America is run. There is a middle way tho.

Now, in my country we got an apple for free everytime before lunch break, everything else we had to pay for ourselves (tho we were not allowed to go into shops during breaks). Kids would usually go home for lunch time and eat something there or take a sandwhich to school, once in the week we would have cooking classes where the school paid for the ingredients.

Instead of giving out free meals at school, the state subsidizes families which don't earn the minimum necessary to make the poverty line and aren't able to pay for essential needs (this minimum is determined by an independet commision, which calculates how much a household needs to survive every year) But this covers onlys for the bare minimum, things like free-time activities are not included. (Why this isn't ideal is a discussion for another topic.)
Included in this calculations are also things like lunches for kids in case they can't eat at home and need to visit canteens where they stay during the break. This is calculated individually tho for every household and not every state in the country subsidizes it.
But this also means the families have to manage the money they're given themselves, this is where the self-responsibility part kicks in.

I still think it's f***ed up tho that US students amass several k in debts just to get a decent education, since it's the future of your country you're investing in and the economy benefits from a higher educated society. Health care also is a topic for itself, so I don't want to open that book up, in our country it's mandatory for everyone to have health care, so it's universal, but it's run by private companies who compete against each other. The compulsive part (basic health care) can't be used to make profit tho, you can pay more if you want and get supplemental aid. When something happens (like an accident at work or sickness) part of it is paid by a state fond which we all fund together, via the employer (who gets taxed) and another part is deductible (you pay it yourself).

So as you can see there's a kind of middle way which shares the cost on both sides: the individual and the society

And that is not a simple question at all but since it’s seems you are only able to gauge simplicity I’ll say I believe that humans do have the fundamental right to ACCESS food because they are human
