I got free school lunch all throughout elementary and most of middle school, and didn't realize it until it wasn't the case anymore that it's not complementary and that the stigma behind kids who get free lunch/can't afford to pay is a negative one that lends itself to bullying.

Luckily, since then I've started to see more schools try to change this and offer free breakfast, but it's a still wild to even have that happen in the first place.

I remember being 11 years old, not being able to get lunch some days because my parents ain't give me lunch money that week and having the lunch lady tell me I already owe three bucks. Imagine being paid to tell a CHILD that they don't get to eat cause they're broke. You know what that does to a child mentally?

I don't know about other schools, but in my school growing up, if you didn't have the money, your plate would get snatched and you'll be handed a peanut butter sandwich. And that peanut butter sandwich basically became a signifier for all the other kids to start bullying you and call you poor.

I've seen kids burst into tears the moment they see the lunch lady pull out the peanut butter sandwich, it was that bad and traumatizing.

It's just really crazy to think that this is really an issue going on in our country. And that's not even speaking on how terrible, lacking in nutritional value and low quality the actual cafeteria food itself is. As well as the shady practices these food distributors use to get away with feeding children this crap, such as approving ketchup and french fries as a "serving of fruits and vegetables".

It's all disgusting and we should be ashamed of ourselves.
