Came in mostly R&B and garnered a fan base from it and slowly but surely phased it out of their sound Weeknd moreso than Frank but both did it
No matter what you never abandon what brought you to the dance
It’s that No matter what you never abandon what brought you to the dance

It’s that No matter what you never abandon what brought you to the dance
It’s that No matter what you never abandon what brought you to the dance
There’s nothing wrong with that though
Why is this “turning your back” sentiment only ever applied to r&b (and country) artists?
it’s implied? op didn’t imply s***, he just copy pasted the thread title lmao
he was talking about music, and I don’t even agree with him. artists should whatever the f*** the want, you are the one that brought up race for controversy
I didn’t bring race into it for controversy. If you took it that way that’s on you.
You in here fighting ghosts
Weeknd was always making pop music since House of Balloons, it was just “cool” to y’all. Now the pop music he makes is no longer cool to y’all.
His format never switched up either lol since the mixtapes (excluding Thursday and some of EOS) it was mainly pop songs with a few pure R&B songs on there. Starboy, BBTM, After Hours, and Dawn FM all follow that same formula.
Channel Orange was also pretty much a pop album as well.
shaquille really brought up race just because
why do white people get so angry whenever someone says anything about race
f***ing moron
Why is this “turning your back” sentiment only ever applied to r&b (and country) artists?
Because it’s the easiest genre to break through then start doing completely different s***
Why is this “turning your back” sentiment only ever applied to r&b (and country) artists?
I hear it in every genre lol
Kanye is an easy example when it came to 808s regarding Rap
Why is this “turning your back” sentiment only ever applied to r&b (and country) artists?
Because they’re very cultural genres so some fans take it very personally when they see an artist “abandoning” it for a more pop sound or fanbase
Dawn FM numbers definitely means he’ll be back next album rollout. Also probably finally ovoxo reunion
Hope not an ovoxo reunion sounds more boring than watching paint dry
Why is this “turning your back” sentiment only ever applied to r&b (and country) artists?
It’s not. You could apply this to Post Malone who turned his back on hip hop.
I don’t see it as turning their backs
esp. not in franks case
Weeknd you could make that claim for sure especially post-BBTM/SB

They did when it was dying for the new gen
Trilogy mixtape along with Nostalgia Ultra + Channel Orange (along with Drake) reignited interest in RnB in my era/gen when it was starting to be looked at as corny by a lot
Shout out class of 2014
So they all sparked a flame, brought in a whole new gen of artists (Bryson, Party, Brent, etc) and then started making music that they wanted to make after gaining international fame
I don’t see what’s wrong w that
I can’t believe The Weeknd started making cheesy 80s music. He needs to go back to sampling classic 90s rnb, like Aaliyah.

MGK too

A lot of it was RnB with a twist.
Franks always had popish sound n themes i agree, disagree with weeknd.
Part of the reason why the og og weeknd fans most of them were mad at kissland back in the day because of it now "being pop".
A lot of it was still rnb tho, & i say weeknd was still pretty much rnb overall until starboy with some pop elements/songs here n there.
Now he's onto some more disco & synthpop sounds. You dont have to sound like a 70s soul band or a 90s croon group to be rnb, imo.
Pop elements existed in there music to an extent, but to day it was mostly pop back then is dishonest imo. It wasnt pop sounding nor pop in terms of the sound being popular of that early era. Frank moreso yes, but weeknd i disagree almost fully.
also the idea of genre is completely outdated

No it isnt lol.
Genre is just a way to catagorize similar sounding sounds & themes to discuss, discover & tangible-ise music.
Very pretentious thought without any serious weight imo.
I didn’t bring race into it for controversy. If you took it that way that’s on you.

Lame how whenever niggas try to express how they feel niggas invalidate it by saying we bringing up race for no reason

Many of the songs on HOB had no structure at all and rarely any pop elements besides some samples. Calling that s*** pop music is actually just flat out wrong.
