also the idea of genre is completely outdated

You're right. Can't wait for Gojira to come out with a Marvin Gaye inspired album.
I don’t see it as turning their backs
esp. not in franks case
Weeknd you could make that claim for sure especially post-BBTM/SB

But even on those records he was still making “R&B” music the way y’all describe it
So they all sparked a flame, brought in a whole new gen of artists (Bryson, Party, Brent, etc) and then started making music that they wanted to make after gaining international fame
I don’t see what’s wrong w that
Im not daying there is anything wrong with it, i was just saying to dude who imo was mocking they ever "changed" anything when its obvious they did in that early period.
But yeah artists evolve n change. Im not mad at any of them for it. I think Frank is still mostly hinself although he rarely drops, n i think weeknd just chose to follow one influence more than the other as he got older while dapping in his "vintage" every now n then.
No it isnt lol.
Genre is just a way to catagorize similar sounding sounds & themes to discuss, discover & tangible-ise music.
Very pretentious thought without any serious weight imo.
what determines that s*** at this point?
“oh there’s an 808 and certain cadences, must be a rap song”
“black person singing? R&B”
s***s dumb
music either connects with the listener or not all that other s*** is superfluous nerd talk

Many of the songs on HOB had no structure at all and rarely any pop elements besides some samples. Calling that s*** pop music is actually just flat out wrong.
Check this out, I made a thread on this exact topic
House of Balloons is full of straightforward structure which is why I consider it a pop album. Thursday fits more with what you’re saying
Lame how whenever niggas try to express how they feel niggas invalidate it by saying we bringing up race for no reason
You think that if op said that Frank and Abel are obligated to do R&B because they are black I would agree bro?
Op was clearly talking about the music, Shaq post was purely for conflict

If you think genre is "superfluous nerd talk" then you dont what youre talking about lmao. Genres are actually a thing for the casual/mainstream audience.
And you are literally stripping to barebones lmao. If you can recognize basic elements thats on you. 808s are also used in pop music & rnb and even country btw, thats not all it is. Youre dumbing it down to pointlessness for the sake of your stance, when its more than that & actually not all that difficult.
It only get "difficult" or "messy" when you start talking in depth and nitpicking, which most people dont do & thats not the point of the usage of genre.
Very pretentious & blinded take imo. I never agreed with it. Its actually only "music nerds" that have an issue with genre & nutpick & cherrpick.
Genre is just a way for easy organizing and identifying. Thats it.

Not directly but just because something isn’t on purpose doesn’t mean it can’t make someone feel a way
I 100% understand what Shaq is saying but also don’t think OP is doing that intentionally because they’re black
It’s a nuanced discussion and if u dont wanna have it then don’t have it but don’t invalidate niggas feelings, plus u aren’t black right?
There is plenty of great r&b artists out there outside Abel and frank
Neither been really making r&b for a long time
Why is this “turning your back” sentiment only ever applied to r&b (and country) artists?
It's basically the "artist goes pop" sentiment that artists of all genre's have gone through
Furtado, Nikki, RHCP, etc.
Also im sidck of people acting like 808s is a totally new thing and a unique instrument
Its been around since the 80s, and its just a version of synth bass (even the modern versions).
Its not hard.

You right about HOB. I was thinking more of trilogy as a whole. HOB is more accessible and has more structure than Kissland and Thursday.
He definitely switched his formula tho, everything is fomulaic down to the bone now. I miss the freestyles blended in and random tangents in his music. Sure it made the music more amateurish but it made it unique

Thank you bruh. I could see how what I said couldve been taken the wrong way but I didn’t have no malice behind it.
DHL an R&B slow jam and a lotta y'all on KTT hated it so f*** y'all.
dhl such a good tune idk how tf people didnt like that one

Not tryna argue, but did you listen to Dawn FM? It’s one of his weirdest albums to date and goes back to those weird things that made trilogy cool but in his current form
He has whole ass freestyle songs (Starry Eyes) and whole ass tangents that are songs (Every Angel Is Terrifying)
dhl such a good tune idk how tf people didnt like that one
Cause they don't have a boy toy who suck them like a Hoover
