Not the score necessarily, but the way it’s written. It has that Pitchfork snark to it.
I might have to read it again
"It's worth remembering that Weezer have always been a supremely corny band."
Oh for sure I see it now
I agree with you, but they still praised the album saying it was his most personal since Pinkerton. It sounds like the only problem they have is with the lyrics.
They seem self aware that Rivers has always had corny lyrics even pointing out the silly ones on Pinkerton but for some reason here it supposedly is a clash with ambition and instrumentation which is a criticism that makes sense. Only probably is he praises Greatest Man That Ever Lived as if that song doesn’t have plenty of goofy lyrics. I get wanting the 50 year old to be a bit more “mature” with his songwriting but it’s Rivers Cuomo, not a typical moody singer songwriter like Elliott Smith or Conor Oberst. I too would like to see Rivers dip into their sensibilities since I think he shares their vulnerability often but at the same time it’s a criticism towards what he was expecting rather that what it was.
my goat
the fans still get a royalties check to this day from the song since it was commercially released on dtfm
Love to mf see it

they want weezer to be something they never were
they never review other artists like this
Rivers just played a little bit of Aloo gobi, and f*** dude, it sounded so good.

I just don't see how he says this could be his most personal since Pinkerton, yet it gets called out by its "lazy lyricism". Wouldn't lazy songwriting be labeled as the opposite?

Just when I lose hope

They mainly brings up stuff like the “sad, bad, mad” rhyme scheme as an example or the song that apparently sounds like an ad for Audible. I guess I’m just not totally sure where they’re coming from until I hear it myself.

fees like summer is about an ex girlfriend who died
is that not personal enough?
Just when I lose hope
I mean the rest of the reviews and reactions so far have been overwhelmingly positive, so that one review hasn’t really effected how I’m feeling.

I think there’s a reasonable criticism to say the sound doesn’t reflect the subject matter or vice versa. I just don’t think they know exactly what that marriage of sound and subject actually is and if they even want it.
Also, rivers is doing a call on zoom in the morning tomorrow, and he’s gonna stream OKH, I could either go and listen to it with him, or I could wait and listen to it with you guys.
