last year the big wave in rap was sampling old hits (first class jack harlow, super freaky girl nicki minaj, vegas doja cat) but right now i’d say we’re in an intermission of sorts. if i had to predict what’ll be big this year:
-central cee will only get bigger and bigger, he’s inarguably well poised at the moment whether you like him or not
-ice spice will secure another major hit thanks to her dedicated fanbase and female rap will only get bigger
-travis could have a huge year depending on how utopia is handled
-metro will be everywhere, trap could return to its 2016 popularity thanks to his collabs with future, marvel, etc
-drake will switch things up this year exploring the “florida with love/jumbotron s*** poppin” soundcloud sound
-uzi is in a good position, with their drake collab likely dropping this year and their album nearing completion
-either a new plugg/rage rapper will score a massive hit likely though tiktok that introduces the mainstream to the genre, or yeat will secure a big one with drake, regardless i think we’ll see the first top 40 song in the genre
as of right now, artists like yeat, ken carson, and destroy lonely are huge with youth audiences but haven’t fully broken into charting territory. this will be their (and their peers’) year to make their genre huge
I truly don’t see none of the dudes you named at the end ever having a crossover moment to blow up like that tbh I think if Yeat was gonna blow up it would have happened last year.
I think Drake will drop a 2000s inspired gangsta rap album tbh and maybe that’ll start a nostalgic soul sample wave in mainstream rap again (just blaze influence)
Anything can happen this year though but it’s crazy how we’re in April and nothing major has happened in hip hop yet
You consider Jack Harlow and Doja Cat rap? Much less, representative of the genre?
jack harlow definitely a rapper whether you like him or not and doja raps
it does feel like a lot of promising sounds kinda got played out or were cut short
drill is the obvious one, when Pop Smoke died it still had its time but definitely felt like it could have been huge
I was expecting Detroit to blow up once I started hearing paperwork party played in bumfuck nowhere Illinois but beyond face and dugg nobody really got attention outside of the scene
probably didn’t help that Rio was locked up and Veeze just stopped making music

i think ken, lonely, or yeat need an “xo tour life” level hit, i.e an unexpected hit that shocks the mainstream, but i agree it’s highly unlikely

i think drill still has a chance to get big again because it’s a healthy scene with so many new rappers coming up every day, even though there are no major figures in the mainstream doing it right now
There will never be another “wave” again, not just in music but all of society
The media has killed the consciousness
We will accept what they give
Scary times
Honestly think Rap is going to go back to its roots soon
what that looks like in this day & age we will have to see
i’ll bet money on future having a huge year
do you think his sound will evolve? he’s clearly able to experiment (Save Me, Hndrxx) but most of his albums since Purple Reign have just sounded like less and less impassioned versions of DS2

What makes you think this
Female Rapper dominated Era
Thot Rapper dominated era. If it were diverse like if rhapsody and em were dominating, id agree with your post. but its just thots running wild.
Man you niggas do nothing but complain about rap lol gah damn y’all are so insufferable sometimes. This the only place that disrespects hip hop while at the same time not even being in tune with s*** outside of the same few hip hop heavyweights. Niggas don’t even listen to enough rap to form real opinions.

i think wait for u, one of the biggest songs of last year, definitely proved arguably for the first time his melodic singing style showcased in hndrxx could have major mainstream success (also it’s a super unique song in his discog). then again, superhero was/is huge too proving he still has the formula for trap hits. given he has an album with metro this year, i’d expect more trap. but we’ll see if he experiments more
In between eras
nah it’s been 7 years since 2016 and that class has already peaked, it’s like kanye from 2004-11 & drake from 2010-17
The era just needs to grow more since it’s been stunted by the way the industry is rn
i wonder what major artist will score a hit with it next
idk why this post cracks me up so much
