I think it’s moreso due to the fact these days the most resonating marketing for an artist with the general public is to come off relatable and attainable rather than being seen as some exclusive and perfect person.
Same reason why Taylor Swift is the biggest artist. White women like the dorky, non-sex appeal, and the relatable girl next door vibes. It makes them connect with the artist further when they can see themselves in them rather than feeling jealous/non relatable.
"is to be relatable and attainable"
smoking on opps is relatable fasho

It’s definitely affected HipHop massively too.
I would say it’s another reason the genre has stagnated and we do not have new superstars. Instead we now have all these artists that are very popular in their local region/hood, because they are extremely relatable and marketable to their hometown.
We have a million Moneybagg Yo’s, NBA Youngboy’s, Lil Durk’s and DaBaby’s that can get by on being 4/10 on average and just s***ting out a new mixtape every month with the same songs over and over but are huge in whatever area they rep.
We don’t have a new Drake, Kanye, Jay-Z, etc that has undeniable skill, appeal to almost any region, and the complete ability to define the genre now.
As I said I think it comes down to people just liking so much regional/hometown rappers that appeal specifically to them and seem like your most average regular niggas hanging in the cut in Detroit, NOLA, etc.

What year do you think it is? Gangster rap has not been the dominant strain of pop rap forever

This right here I think is a lot cause the cool rappers to look up to for Gen Z born folks/potential rappers are mostly hood appealing rappers from the 2010s like Keef, Future and Thug - the type of guys who don’t prioritize that mold. The coolest guys for previous gens were the crossover undeniably skilled rappers, but that’s not the case for the young dudes of today
Like Hov and Wayne were the coolest guys someone from Drake’s age range would’ve seen throughout his adolescence into adulthood
Most modern rappers are ugly, antisocial, and uncharismatic. They don't know how to make sexy music

people like Topaz and Smino and Saba woulda been superstars if they came out like 10 years earlier.
