never saw the original but i hope it does flop just so decade long waits in between sequels never becomes a thing
probably a very stupid question but there's no way to watch this in 3D without actually being in IMAX/Theatres right lmao
I got some spare 3D glasses from like cereal boxes and the sly cooper game that had 3D lmao
Avatar hate is so corny - sure the movie isn’t the best from a writing standpoint but technically and boundary pushing wise, it’s a monumental landmark in modern cinema.
Easily the greatest 3D experience which single handedly launched a plethora of films to be shot in the same format at an unprecedented rate for the next 2 years.
Anyone calling it “overrated” doesn’t seem to know the meaning of that term too well. No one really rates the movie higher than it needs to be and those who do probably stem their love for it due to the experience they must’ve had in theatres which is fair and understandable.
Cinema fans will yell at studios for rebooting past franchises and funding boring movies yet get angry when a director wants to push the scale of film making technology.
My boy James going underwater for this next one!
Ppl thought titanic and avatar were gonna be huge flops before release too. This gonna be huge
Why the f*** this movie took a whole decade to make ?
why did it take Cameron 10 years to make the first movie
I remember seeing the first one in theatres and thought it was one of the best movie experiences I'd ever had. Probably the only 3D movie I'd ever liked.
I never saw it again after that but I bet the effects and everything would fall flat af with a home viewing.

tbf (as someone who thinks the film is total dogshit) the wait was/is largely for technology to catch up
Cameron wanted to do some crazy underwater s*** that wasn't possible a decade ago, new visual effects etc. Whether or not this stuff is good or not, and if it justifies the wait remains to be seen, but I don't think long waits like this are going to be normal because big franchises remaining a constant in the public sphere and staying relevant is a tried and true strategy
Unless its absolute dogshit, I’d bank on it reaching a billion. If that’s considered a flop, then
Lmao it won't. The hype behind it will be so f***ing stupid. I don't think ppl realize. They are going to SHOVE it down audiences throats.
And if you're talkin box office, I'd say 8-900 million is a big success. Taking into account the changed landscape and the unexpected groundbreaking (and sort of) unprecedented success of the first one.

Low key might be the first flagship movie to establish Fox as still a legitimate studio under Disney

Some franchises can go many years without another installment and still retain the same amounts of hype. See the matrix and star wars

The lore and possibilities in those is really cool because those had multiple movies before the long wait started.
Here it is after 1 movie in which the lore and world really are not anything special anymore, hoping the sequel changes our minds.

It's not really about changing your mind though, right? I mean the very nature of this thread is about if it's a "hit" or a "flop". And clever writing and interesting characters aren't gonna do it. Spectacle will do it. They are gonna spend MONEY on this marketing.
This is one of those movies where quality is cool but it is not king

True, but what they could do is make it a huge spectacle but fill it with hints and worldbuilding. Worldbuilding is key to make people excited in the long-term.

Man that would be legit beautiful if that happened. Something ppl can take away and sort of tinker with until the next installment. I truly hope the art design team and...no. its not them.end of the day it's the studio and Cameron. I hope they make good interesting choices with the world and tone.
Seriously I hope for what you've proposed. Love it.
I'm trying not to get my hopes up bc as we all know here, hype can be a big ass red herring sometimes
name 3 characters in the movie
just watched this s*** last year i cant name one. movie was entertaining though
It’s not gonna be anything like the first one, they waited too long. “Avatar” isn’t in anybody’s minds.
