he took the bubbling underground industrial rap aestetic and cleanedd up the ssound for a mainsstreeam audience
and was a good songwriter + sang/rapped and could make hits. he was a well rounded artist plus he had vision and could go over any beats really. made for a good catalog
Look At Me was the Smells like Teen Spirit of SoundCloud rap. A song that turned conventional bangers on their head, just raw energy and unlike much else on the radio.
I think you can draw a lot of parallels between the Grunge scene and the SoundCloud era. Not that they’re equivalent in terms of quality. But they had their own unique style in terms of sound and fashion, the stars weren’t the glamorous guys you had gotten used to from the professionally mastered hits that had previously dominated. The SoundCloud rappers were basically the modern equivalent of garage bands- the mixing was s***ty but if the energy was good, it stuck. And like the grunge era, most of the stars died young.
Off the grunge parallel to answer OP’s question. He caught people’s attention with a unique sound. Instead of doubling down and making the same song a hundred times over, he showcased versatility. I remember listening to 17 expecting some more Look At Me style bangers, and was surprised to see an album that attempted something totally different. He talked about depression in a straight forward way that it’s usually not talked about (and arguably comes across as fake deep), but doing so allowed more of a connection to his fans. Then he became a king of controversy, which generated a lot of interest in him (no such thing as bad publicity).
Kind of a perfect storm moment, and I think he’ll be remembered for a long time as an icon of this era.
Everyone i know who likes X didn't just enjoy his music in a vacuum, they feel a connection to his messaging/what he represented
good music when look at me blew
him and his fans kept saying drake stole the flow too
Is emo still a thing?
apparently so, since rock died down a lot of them migrated to rap during the rise of x, peep, juice and em making sad s***, they were the voices of the new age emos
my niece was in like second grade when he died and she was crying about it
the kids loved it apparently idk
He was different enough and there was a demographic (in the burbs) that wanted a edgy rapper. He's ok but it's a far cry from the hip-hop that I like personally plus his catalog was hit or miss but 17 and ? were well made.
If you don’t get why he’s as big as he is, you’re slow as f*** and should just enjoy music on a casual level
lol dumbass u think I enjoy music on a casual level? I listen to Clairo and Vampire Weekend and Lana Del Rey as well as Lil Durk and Drake. I have extremely good taste

He and Purrp ended up making up at some point. I’ve seen Purrp tweet many times that he misses X and that he really respected him.

You would be surprised how diverse the military is. I’ve met born killers that have gone to war zones and killed people with their bare hands. And I’ve also met people that are even bigger geeks than I am. We all wear the same uniform but we couldn’t be more different.
