I used to do yardwork/landscaping in Appalachia and a guy with hundreds of acres, miles away from the nearest town, would hunt squirrels for fun and make stew sometimes. He let me try some and it in a well seasoned stew with beans and veggies and it wasn’t as bad as I thought itd be. The texture was pretty oily and stringy which was gross but the taste was like a poorly seasoned thanksgiving turkey, but (no surprise here) with a nutty, dirt-y, aroma. As soon as I tasted I was like yeah this tastes like everything a squirrel would eat and roll around in.

Most of the « weird » food ive tried I really like. I love Durian, its my favourite store bought fruit. Chocolate covered insects and spiced crickets are awesome. Especially the spiced crickets paired with mezcal in Mexico. Next on my list is a local food from my home town that are literally fried cod tongues. Haven’t tried it before but next time im home I will!

The only fruit I like more than Durian are foraged raspberries, blueberries and strawberries in the woods of my home town. They have too much nostalgia to dethrone. But store bought fruit, Durian is my favourite ever by a landslide. It’s like my comfort food if my stomach is off or im not that hungry i can always eats a durian lol
