Travis does get bashed more for not having themes/concepts in his music compared to his peers. But I think it's moreso because his aesthetics and the way he structures his albums are very reminiscent of ye or cudi albums that do have concepts and themes.

Nobody is asking him to turn into Jay electronica but you can’t attach yourself to rap music and then act like lyrics don’t matter lol. The whole reason you wanna be a rapper is because you heard/seen someone say some slick s***

Or you can but that’s why none of those type of artists are worth more than their aesthetics and label budgets lol. Niggas are nostalgic for the time period of birds sing McKnight or lil Uzi vs the world but they not saying nothing that stick with you for 20 years like “and the white man get paid off of all of that”

Fully agree

His biggest inspirations are Kanye and Cudi. Well, Kanye and Cudi are the most transparent, raw, and vulnerable artists in hip hop. You can’t take everything from Kanye/Cudi EXCEPT their transparency, it just doesn’t work like that

That’s where I think Travis lacks, but that’s been the story of his entire career and we still love the music

Why is it ok for artists not to put effort into lyrics? Like why do we just give some artists the pass of “oh lyrics just aren’t his thing”

The type of hip hop they making is irrelevant because even s*** for the club can have good writing

And for some reason people think better writing means they have to make some political statements or some s***. Nah it’s just effort

they completely neutered the “have good lyrics” aspect of being an all time great artist so they could gas Future, Carti, Thug and co, cause ya know they don’t really fit in the pantheon of all timers like HOV, Wayne, Kanye on occasion, Drake etc—this sort of thing is why they were unironically crowning Lil Baby as the next Wayne on here

that’s really it, they could just be straightforward and just say the music is good without gassing them but that’s never good enough

And I don’t think you have to be “lyrical” to get artistic respect but you shouldn’t be surprised when artists that are “lyrical” get more

Like obviously they get more because they put more into it

songs that tend to move people the most emotionally (at least in music that features vocals) are the ones they’re able to connect to lyrically or relate to one way or another, that’s a pretty crucial part as to why Blonde (although in spite of having some extremely abstract nonsensical s*** on it) is such a beloved album
